Currently live in a country where I don’t speak local language, but speak english and another language that’s pretty popular. so I always ask what they prefer If I an in a place where most people speak English, I just start speaking. If I am in a place where only few people speak English I ask. So it depends on the David Krumholtz Bernard The Elf Shirt in other words I will buy this situation. I also live in a very touristy Place and think just speaking english without asking isn’t rude, if I don’t understand you, I will tell you anyways. If I do understand you there is no need to ask. In the Netherlands and Scandinavia I’ll ask “Is English ok for you?”, because they get a bit offended at the insinuation they might not speak English. Most people know straight away you aren’t local and can’t speak their language and will switch being polite. It’s hard if you are trying to learn the local language. I always try and greet and say thank you in local language. A lot of countries who speak a good level of English aren’t that good with a native speaker talking at full pace and some more technical words. Swiss: I‘ll answer in english, no problem. But I‘d appreciate the effort a lot if you’d ask in german first and sure as hell would give you a smile (which is high praise from a Swiss, haha). There’s always English speaking people in every tourist place in the world. It makes sense to just speak English first unless you’re comfortable enough with the local language.

Depends where we are. In France. Hell no. I’ll try French first and struggle as best I can. In Amsterdam … English baby Speak a basic sentence in their language and say you don’t speak English , in their language . You will get further and seem less arrogant .
