Meditation is really about learning how to be aware rather than focus on a specific breath or pattern. From the Dad’s Warning Don’t Mess With My Beautiful Daughter Skull T-Shirt and I will buy this spiritual point of view, everything else beyond our awareness is a distraction from reality, so at some point everyone needs to learn how to be aware of their distractions and being aware that they are aware. Based on what you share I would advice to notice your distraction, notice where your attention is going. Like start focusing on your breath, trying to meditate, then as you think of a tv show, your friends or whatever, just catch yourself thinking about that… then be aware that you are catching yourself, and repeat. If you weren’t diagnosed with ADD, I’d say the following: your brain telling you its bored is its way of getting you to go do something entertaining, because it doesn’t like the thoughts that occur to it when it’s not being entertained / distracted. This is known in some circles as ‘monkey mind’, and some have described ‘focusing on your breath’ as ‘giving the monkey mind something to do’ until your body relaxes into the practice, and the mind begins to feel safe and comfortable in the quiet disconnection that meditation provides.

It can be uncomfortable, even difficult. But just like exercise, or starting a new diet – it becomes easier the Dad’s Warning Don’t Mess With My Beautiful Daughter Skull T-Shirt and I will buy this more you do it. Again – these things may not apply to physiological imbalances associated with ADD / ADHD. And yet, meditation has been observed to change brain chemistry over time, with documented cases of some being able to come off their ADD medication entirely. Check out Mindfulness in Plain English, it’s filled with great insights and will give you a solid foundation which to build your practice. The longer you sit the better. Liken the body to a glass of dirty water. Set it down and the sediment sinks to the bottom, leaving the water clear. You have two types of attention. Your direct focus and the awareness of your surroundings. Direct focus is self explanatory. The other one is trying to grab your attention and redirect your direct focus towards something else. Be it lunch, a squirrel, or that itch. The idea is to anchor your direct focus to one point – like the breath – and keep it there. Immediately your general awareness is going to try to pull your direct focus towards anything else. That’s fine, this is normal. When you redirect your focus back to the breath you do the equivalent of a mental pushup. This can take anything from a few seconds to a few minutes. Through neuroplasticity and several thousand repetitions you’re going to train your mind to let go of wandering thoughts and help you maintain focus on whatever it is you’re doing. If you need something to set yourself up for a meditation session try some light stretching. Starting each sitting with some stretching will Pavlov yourself into setting the mood and it’ll become easier to sit.
