I’ll be leading my first in-person meditation retreat in January. I’ve talked with both Shinzen and Soryu about this and asked them for advice on how to lead such an intensive experience. They’ve both given me wonderful advice and strongly encouraged me to go forth and lead the Cute Jack Skellington Nightmare Before Christmas shirt in addition I really love this retreat. Research in education and pedagogy actually suggests that the best learning happens when you’re learning from someone who knows just a little bit more than you, as opposed to an expert. tips for dealing with boredom? i notice boredom feels like a ton of aversion against the present moment, but there is not really any object of craving that the mind is trying to redirect to. Loved your guided meditation with the server about decision making btw Great job seeing the experience of boredom clearly. As you say, often boredom manifests as a resistance to the present moment, but not necessarily a desire for something else. This relates to what I call the attention skill of balance, which is one of the three core skills of mindfulness. I define balance as the ability to allow sensory experience to come and go without push or pull. Considering your description of boredom, I might say that you’re pushing the experience of the present moment away when you’re experiencing boredom. So there’s a lack of balance. You need to relax the way in which you’re pushing away the present moment. And just because you’re not pulling something else toward you, or craving something else, doesn’t mean that you have balance. You only have to check one of the boxes for a lack of balance to be the diagnosis. Are you pushing on something? There’s a lack of balance. Are you pulling on something? There’s a lack of balance. You don’t have to do both for there to be a lack of balance.

So in your case, you are pushing on the Cute Jack Skellington Nightmare Before Christmas shirt in addition I really love this experience of the present moment. First of all, I would try to clarify, in sensory terms, what exactly you’re pushing on. It shouldn’t be vague. You may be resisting body sensation or thoughts or the sounds around you. Clarify what you’re resisting exactly. Next, try to greet the experiences you’re resisting with balance. The standard suggestions to increase balance are: pay special attention to the tone of your labels (they should be calm and matter of fact), maintain global relaxation over the whole body, or put a slight smile on your face. If none of these basic strategies work, consider the turn towards / turn away framework. In this framework, you define the unpleasant experience and decide whether you’re going to turn toward and focus on the experience or turn away and focus away from the experience. Because of the basic instructions of meditation, in both cases you’ll be greeting the unpleasantness with balance. But experimenting with different turn toward and turn away techniques can be helpful because certain techniques for certain people on certain days may make it easier to greet the unpleasant experience with balance.
