Stitch fix has some great petit blazers you can get from freestyle – so don’t have to get a fix in the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but mail. You can just shop. I’ve gotten a lot of my stuff for work in policy/legislation there! Congrats! I love this look and rock it myself, but I know STEM is HARD being a woman. Being small doesn’t help at all. (Personal experience) banana republic and express have some nice professional petite pants if you want to check that out, Plato’s closet is always a good place to start too. I like to stock up on a few linen camis to mix and match and keep a classic cardigan to keep it looking pretty professional without being overly so. Good luck! THIS!! All of this. Like all of it, Im a woman in STEM and studied physics, as well. It was very disproportionate, but then once I got into engineering graduate school doing research, that was hell on earth. And when I started my journey into the professional world, i also bought all my pants from express and if I had the money would’ve bought some from banana republic as well.
Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt, hoodie, long sleeve, v-neck tee
Yes these places plus Loft as well. And I’ve found for a more budget friendly alternative old Navy has a nice petite line for dress pants. Absolutely love your style! You can definitely add in more pieces like oversized blazers or some wide leg trousers that could mesh with your style while also making it a bit more professional. But as someone who recently graduated with a STEM PhD, I think you will fit right in. No one really dresses “professional” or “mature” on a daily basis. I would focus more on finding some business casual clothes you love and feel comfortable in for conferences. Best of luck with grad school!! I have a short torso and have trouble finding blazers that fit my frame. I’ve found lapel-less jackets fit me best they look polished and can be paired with jeans or slacks.- maybe try those when looking for a blazer. Hey! STEM PhD girlie here. I think your outfits 3,4,9 are great for a graduate student! I would add in some blazers and turtlenecks, some pleated pants or ankle pants, maybe some midi skirts. I like your color palettes too, some people are suggesting to be more neutral but I think there is definitely room for color in a professional wardrobe – it’s more about the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but styling than the color itself, if you style it in a more mature way then it should come across less youthful.
I know that oversized blazers are really in now but as a person with petite shoulders (and also a pixie cut – your hair is super cute!!) I think they tend to drown me. I go for a slimmer fit cut or even a crop blazer style (still more slim fitting though, not one of the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but big boxy cropped blazers.) Chelsea or ankle boots might accentuate your calves so if that’s something you’re insecure about (though for what it’s worth, I think your calves are perfectly normal), then maybe try loafers or tall boots. Leave the crop tops and halter for the weekends, stick to polished tees, mock necks, turtlenecks, sweaters, etc. Good luck and congrats on getting into the program!! If you want some inspiration, the instagram and blogger phdinclothes has great inspo for folks across the academic spectrum.

Some information about Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt
I just wanted to weigh in as a petite STEM PhD in the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but UK, it’s ok to keep dressing how you like on a daily basis. I have bright red hair, tattoos, and wear baggy jeans and band tees and rainbow jumpers. In my office and around my department, nobody cares. I’m respected based on my expertise! I can understand wanting professional clothes for conferences and special occasions… but I would strongly advise against revising your entire personal style (which is incredible!) to try “fit in.” Doing a masters/PhD is TOUGH enough as it is, so keep the stuff that gives you joy! I would wait until you get to the Netherlands and check out the stores there. European fashion is bit more sophisticated I read your comment about wanting people to take you seriously as a woman in STEM. I’d avoid halters and crop tops – they are cute for an outing, but aren’t professional. Everything else looks fine to me!
Different shoes! shirts not always tucked into pants! jewellery! perhaps a blazer or appropriate overcoat for specific occasions Do you think just a variety of shoes or that these shoes aren’t working for me? I’ve been a one pair of docs kinda person for 10 years so I could definitely see it being time to change up my shoes! As far as shirt not always tucked, I feel like when I don’t then I look shorter since most shirts are too long for me. Do you have a good workaround for that or do you just embrace the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but length? I honestly don’t understand what you’re talking about. I think your style looks great, I love the look of all your clothes and you have a great figure. I don’t see anything wrong with your legs at all. Be more kind to yourself. You’re clearly beautiful.
I like the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but shirt tucked in. I think its professionally and wear that style myself as a professional. I also try to look professional since I work in a high school and dont want to look like a student. The shoes in #3 are great. Id recommend a comfortable heel. Here’s my trick, get a shoe that’s either a wedge or has a chunky heel with a platform. Platforms mark it seem like you have have a higher heal when your heal might actually be 1/2-1inch. You have nice calves and heals will show them off. I do recommend buying new shoes, because they havent been broken in. I believe doc martens actually has a pretty cut boot with heels. Their Chelsea also looks more professional. I think looks #1, #3 #5 are great. You may want to start using a taylor to get a good fit or learn how to hem yourself. I love a good pleated pant.
Also leave some room in your budget to shop when you get there. Look up Scandinavian style. Scandis have a very cool and unique way of dressing. Lastly, congratulations! Way to be a strong woman in stem Maybe less platforms? Huge lover of docs here as well, maybe some dressier shoes? Or different boot styles even, like chelsea boots. The docs look amazing on you, I just think that may be a big component of why it doesn’t feel “adult.” as for the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but tuck, fellow short torso here maybe utilise different tucking styles occasionally like a tuck in front but untucked everywhere else. I also sometimes tuck on the back and sides and leave the front untucked so it lengthens the torso I would add one pair of nude or black heels that fit really well and cost $$$. Buy it for life stuff. You might also want to add a pair of dressy tennis shoes and a pair of flats, but it’s up to you.
Also, not fashion but I got a pair of Hoka Ora recovery shoes to wear around the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but house and my feet have never been happier. Try and get boots with a sharper or tapered front. It can carry you from the office to dinner to clubbing with the right jackets and accessories. I wouldn’t ditch your current shoes; I’d keep them for casual wear. I think your whole style is going to work really well in the Netherlands. But for more professional times, probably just some basic, minimalist clothing. Something like Ann Taylor for affordable, m.m. Lafleur if you want to spend more. For pants, you mentioned pleated trousers and I definitely agree. Everything will be too long, just accept that you have to get things hemmed. Check out the Harlow pant from Madewell and the Harper pant from Abercrombie. I just purchased these cheaper versions from Target (they had some colors on clearance for $9 at my store) – They are WAY too long but sit ok for me at the waist.
If you’re up for the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but expense of dry cleaning, get some silk tops! Silk looks “more adult” to me and you can get silk tops in similar silhouettes to what you already wear. I get silk at thift stores for very cheap (esp when I visit NYC, just due to the sheer volume and size of thrift stores there) and have even gotten tops hemmed and taken in to fit my torso better. Also, you could wait to do most of your shopping in the Netherlands. The styles and prices will probably be much better there anyways. It’s almost always cheaper to buy clothes in the US versus Europe because of VAT. The Netherlands is quite expensive, and they don’t really have petite sizing so much in Europe. OP will pay a fortune for tailoring because it’s insanely expensive. I also live in Northern Europe and whenever I go home to the US I order a bunch of clothes to wherever I’m staying and I am OPs same height. I have more luck finding clothes that fit me in vintage stores, but it’s still quite expensive. I also don’t think it’s quite as formal in business and academic settings here. My friend who used to live in Leiden told me that people in the Netherlands love leopard print, so OP can do with that what she will
Edit: OP also make sure you have a really good raincoat! Congratulations, the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but Netherlands is a really awesome place Fair, in Europe I’ve only been to Italy and the UK everything (food, clothes, accommodations – normal things, not luxury) was surprisingly cheap to me. I always vaguely thought Europe would be expensive across the board. But I also live in San Francisco so perhaps my perspective is skewed here. Petite is not a big market in the Netherlands – as Dutch people are some of the tallest in the world. Belgium and France are better for petite, but still probably not as much choice as the US. Clothes are also more expensive in all those countries. You look like an adult to me already. If you want to dress more formal for a specific purpose that’s one thing but you don’t need to change your style, I think it’s great.
Avoid things that are very trendy with teenagers and you’ll stop looking like one. Judging by these photos, I would avoid baggy pants and pants with a freyed hem. Go for straight but narrow leg pants, or tapered leg pants. If you add some trousers instead of jeans that’ll also look more serious. Button up shirts as well. Maybe avoid tucking the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but sweater into your pants. I want to point out, though, that there’s nothing wrong with your style and it’s totally fine to continue looking like this for the rest of your life, if that’s what you like. Love your style! As a short 43 year old Dutch woman working in stem, no need to fix your style! I wear my docs all the time. If you do want to go the wide legged pants look, just get some you like and have them shortened at a tailor. Costs you around 10-20 euros in the Netherlands and I do that always. Honestly I think the clothes are fine and adult enough. It’s the poses that make you seem young and energetic. You need to be worn down by disappointment and exhaustion for a few years, then you will feel like an adult no matter what you wear. 🙂
In all seriousness, your style just seems like you. I think your clothes are appropriate. You seem like someone I’d like to be friends with. Now if you’re asking for more professional, that’s a different story. Less denim more blouses, or silkier fabrics. Ok idk who in your life is toxic enough to tell you you dress like a child or immature, nah. I think all of the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but outfits look adult, albeit casual. Maybe the question you really want to ask is how can you dress up like fancier than casual. Btw I love your style Your tops and sweaters are quite nice. Try swapping the denim out for tailored styles. Kinda vice versa too… like, if you wanna slide into jeans for the day pair it with a blouse or button-up. Don’t be afraid to pick the oversized stuff in the case of; tuck the front in if you want to show off a belt buckle, not the whole shirt. Tops of this style you’ve given us would pair so well with some ankle grazers and capris, lil pair of slip on flats, low rise docs even… mules are my favourite in this instance ~ I feel like you could mix styles from, for example, Dangerfield (if you don’t mind prints) and Zara (hitting the mature end of youthful fashion) brands like those. “Corporate but make it you.”
I like these outfits a lot! But I saw your comment about wanting to dress more professionally for grad school, that makes sense, I think you can definitely do that without losing your style, colour and edge. Pic 1: You could wear these pants with a collared shirt or blouse instead, or even the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but white turtleneck from Pic 2. I think the jumper would also work with a skirt. The combination of the jumper and pants is really cute but the volume makes it feel casual/fun/youthful. Pic 2: I think you could use this white turtleneck in more professional outfits, eg with skirts, pants, culottes, a suit even. The cardigan and jeans look great but definitely feel casual and cosy to me, perfect for studying in the campus library though. This green is also a beautiful tone you could explore more. Pic 3: There’s absolutely nothing wrong with your legs! Because this skirt is quite short, I would keep the opaque tights with it for a professional look, but don’t let that stop you from wearing no tights or sheer tights in other settings. I don’t love the green top here, it feels neither here nor there (not quite sporty, not quite professional). A long-sleeved shirt or jumper would work better. You could even try the top half of 1 (untucked), 2 or 8 with this skirt. I like the shoes a lot but they are a big part of why this outfit reads young/punk rather than professional. Try a sleek ankle boot, or oxfords or brogues, or loafers.
Pic 4: Good outfit but I think all these elements read young (puffed sleeves, cuffed jeans, docs). Again, fine for campus. Pic 5-7: All your pants fit you so nicely! I wouldn’t wear any of these elements in a professional outfit though. Outfit 5 feels quite dated to about 10 years ago, and the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but frayed hem feels too short with those shoes, though the cut of the pants is good otherwise. Outfit 6 and 7 are just very casual all round. Pic 9: The shirt looks a little too big around the neck, otherwise would work in lots of professional outfits. The oversize buttons on the cardigan make it feel very youthful but consider a jacket or shacket in a similar boxy cropped cut because I think the overall shape works well for you. – Either one element that’s fitted/tailored, or if everything is loose/oversized/wide, you can break that up with belts, bags and colour-blocking. Shirts fitted to your shoulders always look professional (harder to find in petite sizes but not impossible!).
– Shoes: You have lots of options, just go to any shoe shop that targets professionals and see what you like. Stick to boots and flats if that’s what you are most comfortable with but go for sleeker shapes. – Pants: Wide-legged pants, pleated or not, look really good on you. Don’t stress about pants being too long, getting pants hemmed is generally only $10-$20 and it’s relatively easy to do yourself, so as long as it fits well elsewhere that should just be a quick fix. Just get a couple of pairs that work with lots of tops. – Jackets: You mentioned blazers and jackets, I think they would go a long way to making these outfits more professional. Add a fun blazer to make any look more professional. Or a more professional looking pant with a cool print. I like your style. It gives “Young Millenial” or “Older Gen Z” vibes. Alternatively you can dress up a look with accessories like earrings, necklaces, bracelets or a nice handbag.
I have also been on a ‘I need to dress more adult’ mindset, and my advice would be to not wear what’s trendy and what teenagers/ young adults are wearing. Doc martens, tight high waist pants, ruffle skirts or short skirts, crop tops, are all things that are trendier amongst teens and younger adults. Start leaning more towards classic patterns, mid length or long length skirts, dressier shoes rather than casual shoes. If you’re wearing skirts try pairing them with dress shoes or heels type of thing. Or you can wear short pencil skirts but with black tights. Also ditch the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but sporty casual tops and get more collared shirts, blouses and crew neck sweaters. You can wear crew neck sweater over your buttoned shirts, it’s preppy and classic.
Colors, I can see that you love colors and have a colorful closet. There’s nothing wrong with color but since you want to look ‘’more adult’ and maybe wanna also look ‘professional’, start looking at earthy tones. Dark greens and olive tones, browns, maroons, dark mauves, you seem to love the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but color mustard, may I suggest the color ‘pear’, it’s an earthy yello-green, looks yellow and looks earthy green at times. Accessories are a nice touch, a sweater draped at the shoulders, or a chiffon scarf, or get a nice leather office bag instead of a backpack to carry your things. Also jewelry! If you can invest in some classy gold/silver jewelry. Maybe a nice watch. Nothing screams adult more than someone who has the time ticking and at their disposal at all times on their wrists. Your outfits are fun and youthful for a GenZ. None of your outfits are remotely adult looks though. Why do you need to look more adult? Is it for work or job interviewing?
You are buying into too many trends. Both the Crocodile Wild West Sheriff Shirt it is in the first place but pieces themselves and the fit. Crop tops are definitely not adult whatsoever. And you have those, tops with big billowy sleeves, super chunky shoes, and mom jeans….all trends that will be very dated eventually. Buy classic pieces. Pick one special item per outfit. Choose a fit that is body skimming but not tight or revealing skin. Spend more money on less items, but buy better quality. No offense, but you can tell these items are not expensive. Nope nope nope. People who are emotionally mature will show you the same respect that you show them. This is not the 1900’s but unfortunately you will still find many misogynist in professional realms. Sure, no bare midriff. But there is absolutely nothing unprofessional about your outfits. Many men get by wearing unironed golf shirts and ill fitting khakis (normal “professional” clothes)… Stop trying to impress shitty people who should be focused on the quality of your work by trying to dress a certain way. If someone at your place of work is too focused on what you wear rather than your work and business performance that is a big big red flag and you need to get out of there asap. It is totally legit to want to wear things that make YOU feel more confident in your role. NOTHING you wear, do, or say will change how a misogynist treats you at work.
