Until a few years ago, it was extremely simple replacing the Creature from the Black Lagoon Poster Shirt and I love this Apple batteries yourself. Now it’s basically impossible. In Japan? Recycling someone’s garbage without permission. Touching their garbage at all. You could use a discarded couch and save it from the garbage dump, but be arrested for it. The neighborhood bin was in front of my house. One day, there was a nice kotatsu table in the gomi with a note left on it (but I couldn’t read it). I asked my neighbor if I could take it. They got a little bit exited or agitated (I couldn’t quite follow the whole situation with my limited Japanese). They called the neighbor whose number was on the note and they got permission for me to take it. Everyone was super happy because the note was for the garbage collector to know where to send the bill. I got a free table and they didn’t have to pay to dispose of it. Sigh. I miss Japan! It’s usually pretty expensive to throw away something over 30cm long. And you have to arrange for it to be collected like a month in advance, with it just sitting in your apartment until then. Some people even break things down into smaller pieces to throw away one piece at a time. I can see why your neighbor was over the moon you took it.

Hell, I do that now in Texas. We can have one can plus seven black bags of any size each week, included with our monthly trash charge. I have an old couch that I broke into pieces with a sledge hammer and dispose of weekly in contractor bags because the Creature from the Black Lagoon Poster Shirt and I love this next bulk trash day is months away. Damn that’s a LOT of trash. How much is it monthly if you don’t mind me asking? I’m in a small town in MA where we have to find our own trash pickup company and mine allows us 3 of the big black bags or 6 smaller kitchen sized bags but I only pay like $30 a month. In America if someone puts a used couch on the sidewalk that’s just an invitation to take it. It’s in the unwritten rules. It’s written rules too. Courts have ruled that garbage placed on public property is no longer considered private.
