This isn’t about Covid any longer. But I agree my juniors and seniors “on level” are not on level at all. I watched students repeatedly pull out a calculator to subtract 9.6 – 2.0. They can’t read a graduated cylinder, or use an electronic balance. My suspicion is that people, outside of teachers, are mostly unaware of this as a systemic and far reaching problem. In general ‘there’s something wrong with this generation’ type stories play extremely well, but I don’t know that I’ve heard of anyone talking about this deficit. I’m curious how many of the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this general public are capable of the things you listed. They may be behind expectations, but within a much larger historical and global context, I wonder how off things really are. As of 2022, 21% of ADULTS in the U.S. are illiterate. Fifty-four percent (54%) read below a sixth-grade level, with ~30% of those not born in the U.S. (while ~70% are natural citizens). MORE THAN HALF OF ALL U.S. ADULTS can’t read Middle School-level texts.*
Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt: A Unique and Creative Design
In 1992, according to the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this National Center for Education Statistics, 40 MILLION U.S. adults were literate below Level 1 Literacy, their definition of which includes having difficulty using or understanding print materials. People are fucking dumb. Always have been, always will be. Some of those dumb people are really, really fucking dumb. And that’s just the way it is. Lots of factors, controllable and uncontrollable, dictate how that shakes out. I think a true failing of many teachers these days is expecting the vast majority of students to be “teachable.” That they can just get there with the right teacher, resources, or help. That is not the case. For many, many students, there a handful of reasons why they will not reach what is deamed by the system to be an acceptable level of education. Ever. A lot of these posts read to me like teachers, who were likely average-to-above average performers as students themselves, finally getting to see it from the the other side of the desk. Now you’re actually, really seeing what a sample size of the American public is actually like academically, and you don’t enjoy what you see. Truth hurts.
It wasn’t “better back then.” You just didn’t notice how truly dumb your classmates were because their performance didn’t affect you — or wasn’t as noticable to you— the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this way it does or is as a grown educator. Connect with the students you can connect with. Provide the needed motivation and energy when it’s needed. Work to tailor your lessons in ways that work for many different kinds of students. When you get a student who excels, praise them. When you see hard work, reward it. Your job isn’t to take things back to how they used to be. It’s also not to churn out rooms full of competent adults. It’s to try your best to equip people for the future with the tools you have now. The dead-ringer, right-in-the-middle, number 50 out of 100, average American is a moron by every metric we have. Imagine what 1-49 are like. Seventy percent (70%) of every classroom you have, forever, will be challenged or challenging students.

How I can buy this Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt
Dumbing down the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this schools started in the 60s. We are now reaping the harvest. Remember, the government and the “ruling class” does NOT want a well-educated populace capable of critical thought. It doesn’t fit with their agenda. This sounds pretty similar to the kids I went to school with and we’re becoming parents now. Sadly I think this is an issue that is snowballing. I thank my parents constantly for sending my to a private kindergarten and 1st grade that specifically taught phonics. My mom’s younger brothers had reading issues due to sight words. No one with power wants to be the bad guy. Elementary and Middle schools have social promotion so there’s almost no accountability. Parents don’t want the embarrassment of holding back their kids. The cheap/free community college admits anyone with a diploma, meaning students don’t need to try particularly hard. What principal wants the backlash for holding the line and saying to parents that their kid can’t move on? What college president wants a high fail rate because students can’t pass 101 classes? So much financial incentive is riding on high test scores and enrollment. Folks want a piece of paper and not an education. These kids are going to struggle so much in the workforce one day. I’m seeing a big market for teaching adults from this gen once they realize how detrimental this is.
I’m q Spanish teacher. I just taught one of my freshmen students long division this Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this year. She never spoke up about not knowing how to solve it. Now imaging me trying to get them excited about, nevermind actually learning, a foreign language… several came into high school with 2nd and 3rd grade reading & math levels. The future is terrifying to think about once we truly have to share society with people with 0 empathy and no reading & critical thinking skills. I do interventions for 5-8th graders. I decided to do “boot camps” for certain concepts. First, it was basic multiplication and division. Now it’s integers. Next, it will be a research essay, from googling to citing to punctuations to paragraphs. I’m not a math teacher but a 7th grade gen ed student asked my friend what 7X3 was during lunch…i was like… wasn’t multiplication tables like 4th grade
A big one for me is simple geography. I’m a high school Spanish teacher. This year I’ve encountered students who don’t know the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this difference between a country and a continent. Or that the country that borders the US to the south is Mexico. Or that South America doesn’t begin at the southern US border. I had a student tell me that she thought that “Mexico was in Spain,” whatever that’s supposed to mean. Another one is parts of speech. It makes my job so much more difficult when I have to spend time helping the majority of my students discern between nouns, adjectives, and verbs. I graduated high school in 2016, and I remember needing to understand all of this stuff by about 3rd grade, non-negotiable. When is the government going to hold the American people accountable? Because that’s what’s going to happen. American parents have incrementally abdicated the responsibility of raising their children over the years in response to the creation of the department of education. There comes a point where the government needs to step in, take kids from families and start punishing parents. Hard labor sentences may actually help to be honest.
IANAT. That said, none of this sounds new. There have always been students who couldn’t functionally read or write. It’s definitely a problem, I just don’t like it being framed as a new problem. Or their kids are the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this exception because their families are well off and/or the parents have the resources to make sure their kids are educated properly I honestly think is has to do with technology. I remember old people talking about how “the screens are going to rot your brain” and thinking they were delusional. I think this huge problem is at least in part caused by endless easy entertainment and never being bored and having to use your imagination or problem solve. I worked as a TA in a kindergarten class back in 2008-09 and this stuff wasn’t really an issue then. Even the worst performing students knew how to write their names, colours, most shapes, ABCs, Count to ten etc. This was basic stuff for 5/6 year olds then.
I was at the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this Canadian equivalent of the DMV a couple years ago while teens were getting their first drivers licenses and only one out of the group of like 10 could sign their name. I was pretty shocked. I had to show one of my 8th graders a calendar today. She didn’t believe me when I said that this year, February has 29 days. “But where did the other one go?” She had been taught every other month has 30 days, so she thought a day was taken away. She couldn’t believe that February usually only has 28 days. They know. In capitalism everyone sort of knows these are kids that they will not have to compete with or their kids will not have to compete with. Not they want people to be stunted, it’s just that they don’t really care. Our library is 25 percent graphic novels now and they are never going back. 5″ books with 35 sentences, kids think they are real books. Our PE classes don’t teach sports, just games with no score and scant rules. I met a 14 year old that thinks of themselves as normal and smart that didn’t know how to tie their shoes.
And yet my teacher preparation program was trying to gaslight all of us into thinking none of these are actually problems. I don’t mean to put this all on teachers, but who is passing them to get to a level they haven’t achieved? I’m guessing it’s a problem in the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this system, but wouldn’t those skills have been taught by the earlier teachers? Stop passing failing students. Are there any parents who have discovered their adult child is ignorant AF and their terrible parenting has finally caught up with them? Still raising your adult child with no hopes of them getting and keeping a job, and capable of moving out? (let’s pretend the cost of living is manageable) Or perhaps their child is already in prison? Not a teacher so I’m sorry if my comments aren’t wanted. I don’t believe anyone blames teachers for this. It’s the government that is forcing teachers to pass kids who should not be passed if I understand correctly. I assume most teachers don’t want to pass a kid to 1st grade if they don’t know their shapes let alone passing all the way through school. Please let me know if I’m wrong here.
I keep trying to point this out to my daughter’s teachers and staff. She, a freshman, is behind. She can do all of the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this things on your list except the research skills. She also doesn’t have good organizational or study skills. She has a folder full of completed assignments that she hasn’t turned in and when she does they are handed back and said “they are done wrong.” So, I guess, in the grand scheme of things, she is doing better than I thought. However, while I try and help her get caught up and the missing skills working for her, I reach out to the staff and teachers for some assistance or common sense. It’s a struggle and all I get back, if I get anything, is “I have students.” and “Well this is our policy.”
Sounds like China will be running us over in about 15 years. As a hiring manager in the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this tech industry, it’s a miracle to find even one qualified American applicant in a pool of hundreds. Do you mind me asking where you’re teaching – like general city/state? I have a kindergartener at a local public charter in AZ (apparently terrible state for education) who can do nearly everything you just listed. Ironically, he bombed some entry level testing because it was on a computer and he had never used a mouse before 🙂 but I know he’ll learn. 739 more repliesVietnam has spent decades promoting the ‘One People’ ideal. Of course fostered through its Socialist revolution. National identity is often forged through conflict and the Vietnamese people have endured a lot of that. More recently however, The govt had been promoting that Vietnam has 54 distinct ethnic groups who all have their own histories and bring value to the Socialist Republic of Viet Nam.
The Museum of Ethanology in Hanoi is one of my favorite museums I’ve visited. Highly suggest it if youre interested in Vietnamese culture beyond the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this wartime stuff. Doesn’t the US do something similar, promoting both pride in the country, as well as celebrating America’s ethnic and racial diversity? (Yes, I know it’s different with Vietnam since since Vietnam is still a nation-state on a fundamental level, while the US is not) I don’t think so, I think the US promotes freedom and diversity, and this freedom leads to young educated Americans being critical of America Whereas I’ve seen ethnocentricism in Asia (I won’t name the countries because it’s a bit loaded), at the most extreme level, being used to support the idea of an ethnicity almost having “pure blood” which leads to hot takes on locals dating foreigners but also a bit of unfriendless towards foreigners in general “I don’t think so, I think the US promotes freedom and diversity, and this freedom leads to young educated Americans being critical of America” True, but my comment was about what the US government officially promotes. American students still do the pledge of allegiance, etc. The US government through its programs, education system, also teach about cultural diversity, overcoming racism, etc. Also for every young educated American who is critical of America, there is a super-nationalistic Trumper. No, Vietnamese don’t mind mixing blood. Pure blood ideology will eventually lead to either isolation or fascism.
Literally nearly half the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this country voted for a party who is currently promoting an ideology presented (even by themselves) as “America First”, Americans genuinely believe they are the first in so many metrics (that they are not), and while there are people critical about the United States from within that’s not *celebrated*. This isn’t even purely a Left vs Right thing, there are countless people who are on the American left who regularly promote nationalistic rhetoric. It’s so pervasive. Obviously America’s historic and modern issues with race are well documented as well. I don’t consider them a beacon of diversity. They have a diverse country but it’s a divided and segregated diversity that has open hostilities.
I’m not sure if you are American and don’t realize how much American Exceptionalism is just baked into the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this culture or if you’re not American and are ignorant of their culture. It’s 54 in total but in reality 1 ethnic group makes up 85% of the population. The next 5 biggest ethnic group make up roughly 8%. Common ideologies, shared history of war, mandated state education and official language make it easier to build national identity. As a Vietnamese: Vietnam has a very strong founding myth that goes back 4,000 years, and a long history of about 1,000 years of independent existence, so people are very proud of their heritage. I guess that could be called ethnocentric? Most Vietnamese would speak positively of their country when you ask them. Many are not well-travelled and a bit brainwashed due to the education system and think that everything about Vietnam is the best.
Politically there are two main camps though: in the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this South (esp HCMC) there are more people identified with the former Southern regime and Western democracies, so they would also say good things about the US, Japan, and Western Europe. In the North there are more people identified with the communist regime and would say good things about China, Russia and the former Eastern European countries. The first camp tend to speak more negatively of the government, and the second camp tend to support it. As time goes by this ideological distinction becomes more blurred though. Regardless, both camp will say Vietnam is the best. Vietnam number one. Vietnam vo dich, lol! Ethnocentrism and nationalism, plus cultural identity and other culture aspects have always been a hot thing in Vietnam. Looking from history, we learnt from Chinese people a lot, we adopted their nationalistic personalities and customs, also we got harassed for thousands of years and that has created a somewhat egocentric personality in Vietnamese culture that persist till this day. For example, VNese people tend to be very proud when there is a VN flag in World Cup tournament, even though Vietnam doesn’t participate. This nationalistic feature, plus collectivism among the population, are common in East Asian countries as they expect people to bind together in a group, similar to how ancient people group up to fight a more powerful enemy. The government also uses this cultural feature to promote the satisfaction with the government, and the population also show sympathetic sentiment towards the govt and the people, despite the corruption, because of poor education (it does feel like group masturbation lmao). One special weapon they use is just simply group up and call one person that opposes anything that they think as going against their thoughts as “overseas Vietnamese from the former southern regime living in California”.
A lot of Vietnamese don’t have any concept of the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this outside world. This is an insular, family focused society. The bigger the family, the better. I’ve seen first hand how my friends who don’t come from big families can actually struggle in society. I remember you, in that case, in your opinion how does this kind of thing differ from China? Because that’s my current lens for understanding things like this Your question is about ethnocentrism but you give an example about nationalism. Those are two different things. I’m not sure of a word that both encompasses ethnocentrism and nationalism, but I say ethnocentrism because this kind of thing sometimes can be seen in people who are ethnically Asian but grew up outside of Asia
Speaking of ethnocentrism: well Vietnam actually consists of many ethnic groups, with their own languages, identities, etc. The large majority of them, 90%) are ethnically Vietnamese, or “Kinh”. There are also ethnic Chinese (“Hoa”), Cambodians (Khmer), and many others, including dozens of smaller tribal groups in the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this mountains. Of course nowadays, pretty much everyone regardless of ethnicity can speak Vietnamese and are mostly assimilated. Historically there have been tensions between the Kinh majority and minority groups for complex reasons I won’t get into here, but for the most part they get along reasonably OK. Historically there has been discrimination, and as a result there are affirmative action type quotas in universities, etc. today. Things are now generally better. You occasionally hear stereotypes/derogatory things about certain ethnic groups, especially among older folks, but it’s not considered polite/PC.
Nationalism: as with most countries in Asia, there is a strong sense of national pride. Bring up issues about the Cow I hate it when I’m talking to myself and suddenly realize Shirt and I will buy this territorial dispute (i.e. China yoinking a bunch of Vietnamese islands over the past decades), and many people will feel rather passionate about the topic. Also, much of Vietnamese history involves Vietnam fighting off Chinese domination (e.g. China occupied Vietnam for almost a millennium)… so some folks will get riled up about China. That being said, most people are too preoccupied with their own lives, jobs, personal affairs, etc to get very worked up about ethnicity, national Identity, and geopolitics. This is especially the case for younger folks. (Side note: the blasé feeling about their own country that many young Americans have is something more common with Western countries. The West has had its own cultural and social trajectory, and in my humble opinion a lot of it is the product of WWII, postmodernism, etc. This phenomenon is even stronger in Western Europe, where people mostly moved beyond nationalism after the brutal destruction of WWII. A similar thing happened in Japan. This is why both Germans and Japanese feel awkward/self conscious about overt displays of nationalism…. both countries went all in on nationalism in WWII and were nearly destroyed as a result… Asian countries for the most part haven’t had the same process, except for Japan).
