(Most companies have no room to promote, so if there’s a delay, it’s a lie) 2) What are a couple of your key goals and objectives in your performance agreement for this year? 3) Where do you see yourself in 2-3 years? (No vision or plan, not good for you/others) 4) If I spoke with your peers, what would they say are your managerial strengths? 5) I really want to grow in this position and with this company. What will I be able to learn from you? Not sure if you’re in an office setting or not so YMMV with this but I was taught to ask these questions when recruiting managers: First question tells a lot about their management style. If they say they never/rarely do 1 on 1s because they’re always going to be communicating with you anyways, good chance they lean towards micromanaging. Some also claim they don’t like to micromanage and don’t do 1 on 1s because if you need anything you can set something up with them. That could be better than the first answer, but I’ve seen many managers who operate this way and in reality end up disappearing until shit hits the fan, then they berate the team to do better because they never took the time to truly understand what the team’s been going through and to support them. A good manager should always be taking time to dedicate to you to see how you’re doing, give you the space to share what’s on your mind or vice versa, without it always being ad-hoc conversations. A good cadence would be once a week or once every 2 weeks. The follow up question tells you what’s important to them. Are they only doing project updates with their direct reports? Or do they take the time to check in on you and see how you’re doing? Listen to your concerns? Do they take the time to mentor you? Help you clear whatever obstacles are in your way so you can continue moving forward in your career?

ETA some stuff…Ask every single person you talk to in the process what it’s like working with them. From the recruiter to the receptionist to the janitorial team. Everyone. Ask direct questions, like “do you know anon? What’s he/she like?”, “what is anon like when they’re mad?” “tell me about a time anon brought the team together to bring about a win for the department.” “How often do you meet with anon and what do you discuss?”
