As for me, I had good but strict parents and I didn’t get kicked out but I definitely wanted out asap. But I never felt like I could go back home. I mean I knew I could in an extreme emergency, but I wouldn’t have felt welcome even then. So I allowed a lot of abuse that I know I wouldn’t have put up with if I’d known I could just go home. I made sure my kids always knew that they can come back to Mama if they ever need to, with no questions asked. It’s usually expected that they’ll move out at 18 but only abusive pieces of shit kick them out at 18 I am an old millennial. I think the expectation of being able to move out at any time is based on the X-ers and older who could work 40 hours a week and rent a decent apartment. Our kids can stay with us as long as they want, we always tell them that. I’d expect them to contribute a bit towards bills in relation to whatever is reasonable based on their income, and contribute to efforts around the house and property. If they are full time school and no income that’s fine too. It just needs to be a reasonable responsibility based arrangement. I want my kids to be self sufficient, capable, happy people, and kicking them out at an arbitrary age is probably not the best way to attain that. I think it’s good to set that expectation yet still being a safety net for your children. How many times do we hear about adult children with no ambition, no prospects for creating a family, no drive to reach higher in their career, no desire to do much outside of video games? Some parents enable that behavior and it leads to severe depression when the child hits 34, still works entry-level jobs, has no meaningful romantic relationship, and no real reason to strive for any of those things. It’s one thing to stay with your parents for a year or two so you can afford a down payment on a house, it’s quite another to stay with your parents because you don’t want to become an adult. Growing up my dad always told us at 18 you can go to college or you can get a job but you can’t stay here. Despite how it sounds, he isn’t actually a hard-ass like that. He wouldn’t have actually forced me to live on the street if I couldn’t support myself but it sets an expectation of self-sufficiency. I tell my kids the same thing today despite the fact that I absolutely would let them move back in with me if they fell on hard times.
