In New York City, getting vaccinated against COVID-19 could win you Yankees tickets (or Mets tickets, if that’s more your vibe). In Ohio, Governor Mike DeWine announced a $1 million lottery that vaccinated residents could enter; and Krispy Kreme locations around the Christmas Elf 2021 Very Bad Would Not Recommend T-Shirt in addition I really love this country recently began offering free donuts with proof of vaccination.Vaccine incentives like the ones listed above have generated plenty of press (and, in the case of Krispy Kreme’s promo, some heinous fatphobia), but the question remains: Are they working? Can you incentivize—or, according to some, “bribe”—people to get vaccinated against a deadly disease, or is simply loosening restrictions on vaccinated people more effective at demonstrating that a vaccine can mean life beyond the anxiety and uncertainty of COVID-19?A recent New York Times story about cash-based vaccine incentives noted that they seemed to work best with Democrats, whereas Republicans were more likely to be incentivized by the relaxing of COVID-19 restrictions. In a study, roughly a third of the unvaccinated population polled said they’d be more likely to receive a vaccine if it came with a cash benefit; a notion that is already being put to the test in some states, with West Virginia governor Jim Justice announcing that people between the ages of 16 and 35 would receive a $100 savings bond when they receive their vaccine. While money is the preferred sweetener for many weighing whether or not to get vaccinated, there’s a long list of restaurants, bars, and other consumer businesses offering up goods in exchange for proof of vaccination; a recent People magazine roundup of “Promotions, Prizes and Freebies” listed more than 20 different COVID-19 vaccine-incentive programs around the country, ranging from free cheesecake at Junior’s to a gratis post-shot beer courtesy of Budweiser, to free admission to the New York Aquarium.Of course, some are pointing out that for many Americans, particularly those living in marginalized communities, getting access to the vaccine in the first place continues to be an issue:View on TwitterWhile there’s much about the U.S.’s vaccine rollout that deserves scrutiny, as long as COVID-19 continues to rage around the world, it’s hard not to see the merits of any plan that would get more shots in arms. Hopefully, state-by-state vaccine incentives can coexist with increased efforts to make vaccines easily accessible to all, regardless of where they live.

On Wednesday, May 19, hundreds of workers and allies across the Christmas Elf 2021 Very Bad Would Not Recommend T-Shirt in addition I really love this country are headed out on strike against McDonald’s, asking the company (which has an estimated net worth of more than $163 billion) for a $15-per-hour minimum wage at all of its locations. McDonald’s recently raised its hourly wages in some outposts, but many say those concessions are inconsistent and don’t go far enough, particularly given the challenges of working through a pandemic.Members of the Fight for $15 will walk out of locations in Los Angeles, Miami, Chicago, Detroit, Flint, Houston, and a host of other cities, demanding increased wages across the board as well as union protection and adequate PPE. Below, find the personal stories behind why three McDonald’s workers across the country—Precious Cole, Doneshia Babbit, and Imelda Rosales—are striking on May 19.I’ve been working at McDonald’s for about a month, but I’ve been working in fast food my whole life. I’ve worked at Wendy’s, Freddy’s [a fast-food chain based in Kansas], Little Caesar’s, my first job was at Taco Bell. I’ve pretty much worked at all of them, except for KFC. When I was working at Freddy’s, we had an employee that contracted COVID-19, and the managers knew because we all worked with her. The managers were like, “You have to quarantine yourself for two weeks or go get tested,” and we were all really upset because they basically let her come back to work without getting her negative test results back. Then, when her test results came back, she found out she was positive, and then the whole night crew had to be out for two weeks with no pay. We had to figure out a way to get COVID tested just to come back to work. I’m going out on strike to stand in solidarity with all McDonald’s workers, even though I’ve only been there a short while. McDonald’s has been around forever, and they set the standard for these other fast-food companies to pay us poverty wages. These corporations need to listen to their workers! Whenever I give a speech, I always tell people that these companies are nothing without us. Without us, these jobs would crumble, so we need to stand together and fight for a union and $15 dollars an hour. It’s not enough, but it’s a start.I’ve been working at McDonald’s for over seven years now, and it’s gotten a lot worse since the pandemic. A lot of our employees have quit, so we’re short-staffed most of the time. I started working with the Fight for $15 when I first started at McDonald’s, back in my teens. It just felt like the right thing to do. We said what we need, and we haven’t gotten it, so I’m still fighting. We’re getting paid nickels and dimes, and the shareholders and million-dollar corporations are making money off of our backs. With this strike, I hope to get into the minds of people who haven’t yet seen what we’re working toward. A lot of workers feel unwanted or unneeded based on what they’re being paid or how they’re being treated, so I want to change that.I’ve worked at McDonald’s for over a decade, and I’m on strike today—again—because I know the work I do, the work we all do, is worth $15 per hour. McDonald’s made billions off our labor during a global pandemic, while workers suffered through unsafe working conditions and unlivable wages. I’m tired of McDonald’s putting profits above our safety and keeping workers like me down, and I’ll continue striking and speaking up until workers get a voice on the job.
