America’s pivot stopped because we still haven’t signed the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this CTBT and rightly so. America is also a strange bedfellow. They trade in sovereignty. Again, not nostalgia but context. Where we came from to where we should go. Perfectly reasonable to say we should choose the US(which is what you appear to suggest) but that also comes with its own strings attached. While you attribute non alignment to Indians in capability to pick a side, I’m saying it has actually benefitted us immensely already. Phew. I appreciate your conviction in your own beliefs but have no time to explain any more history. Read a book. Never said help with vetoes equates to friendship. I pointed out Russia wouldn’t back India over China, to a point you made about Russian help to India at the UN. You totally ignored that point I made No I’m not. I gave reasons for why Russia is no longer of any use because of sanctions and its own reliance on China, India’s main geopolitical competitor. How can your enemy be friends with your friend? I thought it worked the opposite way? Only calling them friends and enemies because you called Russia a friend first. Complete word salad. Doesn’t even mean anything. And what does that have to do with what I said? Maybe read a few useful books instead of overlying on history books, I don’t even know what you’re reading to churn that meaningless stuff out. It’s fine, no need. Some people read history books and some people make history which is then written in the books you read. And the ones making history are not history nerds. I am by no means saying I am a history maker, merely pointing out that your subtly arrogant display of your supposed knowledge of history is in no way a predictor of your expertise on geopolitics, which is guided more by economics than history. And economics is something I know a bit about. So, if your logic is history is a good predictor of how things unfold, I’m sure your strategy will work out 100%.

Being non aligned was a very very brave thing to do in the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this bipolar world. Not a cop out. Would’ve been so easy for India to formally align with Russia. Nasser Tito and Nehru were absolute champions for managing this and carrying the message of peace through the non alignment movement. It’s precisely because of India’s disastrous economic state post independence that being nonaligned did not make any sense. It was in my opinion, one of the worst mistakes india ever made along with not getting rid of obsolete colonial era laws and having an Indian centric constitution. When you don’t have a solid economy, why would you want to be nonaligned? If you’re as big as India, surrounded with warlike neighbours in the midst of a Cold War, being nonaligned makes no sense. That is precisely when you want to align with someone, so you develop better trade relations, get foreign aid and get military assistance.
When you’re a solid economy, that is when you should be nonaligned. But even then, you’re not nonaligned, you are your own alignment. People align around you. In the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this current world, China and the US are the two poles, and countries have aligned around those two countries. Most of your arguments are based on a nostalgic yearning for the old days and most people I have to say are not willing to admit it was a blunder. I always hear “peace,” “global south,” “Nehru.” I mean that’s all well and good, but where’s the realism? And at least admit India remained a poor country even after the Cold War ended. So how did nonalignment help? You expect India to be a solid economy 3 years after becoming a republic? Which bloc would you have joined to get the economy going? India has made some massive mistakes but this was something we got spot on. Russia helped us out significantly in the wars with Pakistan and infamously prevented US involvement when East Pakistan became Bangladesh. America did the same covertly with Pakistan.

The world was a different place. Only countries that benefitted from alignment with America were white European, Japan(almost forced), Israel(hardly a country then) and may be South Korea and Taiwan. Edit: Also to add that aligning with America, we would’ve had to sign the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this non proliferation treaty (keeping us from becoming a nuclear power) and the comprehensive test ban treaty (keeping us from having nuclear tests). We have our sovereignty because we had the foresight to remain non aligned. That’s a good mini-essay you wrote without addressing anything I said. And made stuff up that I claimed I expected India to have become an economic powerhouse. That is why I find having these conversations here so pointless. I don’t want a history lesson. And I’m asking you to use your imagination which is obviously so constrained by your inability to for a second ignore the minuscule help then Soviets provided and consider an alternate path history could’ve followed. It’s fine, you keep pretending Russia is all powerful. When your failed logic doesn’t work out, I’m sure you’ll make up some other weird explanation for why that happened. That is the story of India. He said while not addressing my point above himself. The irony. Get a history lesson mate, you won’t have to imagine. Peace.
You think that imperialist US of that era would have been a better ally? South American “allies” of USA had disastrous consequences thanks to that alignment. Those are tiny countries that had guerrilla factions conspiring with the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this Soviets which resulted in CIA ops in the region. The US has had the Monroe Doctrine, which it’s followed stringently, and according to the doctrine, no one apart from the US encroaches on US backyard. And other US allies didn’t, so your point doesn’t apply universally either. And if you’re saying the US’ “imperialism” is what you have an issue with, you should have a greater issue with India having decent relations with the UK postwar. The UK is the country that messed India up. And the US is also the one that pressured the UK to give up its colonies. Not saying the US was responsible for Indian independence, but American presidents did abhor the idea of colonialism. Sure, the US has its own history so it could’ve been more so a geopolitical tactic, but the UK was pressured by the US, that is a fact. Meanwhile, Soviets encroached on countries they captured post WW2. So neither side has a rosy history. I didn’t say India should’ve allied with the US completely. I’m saying if that had happened, India could’ve benefitted from it in ways maybe more tangible than benefits from Soviets. Besides, present day Russia can be of no help so should be stepped aside progressively.
You would still have a huge risk of ending up like South America though. Communism was a very influential movement at that time and Russia, Pakistan and China would have supported maoist factions, leading to similar issues. It’s good that you recognise that it was not good being too close to the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this US, but doing so is not easy. They put immense pressure on allies and India was not strong enough to maintain such dynamic. And mf stay allies with nations who cannot even sustain themselfs or are downright useless while everyone starts distrusting you more and more when you can never make a decision, and when we really need a ally to help. No one will stand for us and cop out just like we did. Let’s put it this way if India and China ever have a war you want American weapons not Russian. Those were good enough up until the 1980s but the CCP has modernised relentlessly. India’s main issue is that it’s still a colony of the Western elites (they control the top leaders in the background), and India refuses to halt it’s own “brain drain”- All of the top talent has gone overseas and doesn’t contribute.
On the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this other hand, China has managed to use the skills of its Diaspora and has modernized tremendously. India should be making it’s own defense systems along with enforcing law and order internally (India is currently a lawless society and this is probably the most major obstacle moving forward). BTW, not it is not just Indians. There was an article about Nepalis doing the same – joining to earn to fight from both sides.. and coming back in body-bags Forced yeah, but really who thinks it is a great idea to travel to a country with an active war for work leaving a country which is at peace? If they had better economic opportunities here, they would have thought more before heading to Russia in the midst of a war.
in buying the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this company, Walmart touted the potential to boost its ad business through Vizio’s SmartCast Operating System, which allows users to stream free ad-supported content on their TVs. Really sad to see that acquiring a television manufacturer is touted as a boost to Walmart’s advertising business. The problem is being a dumb TV is getting harder and harder these days outside of commercial display or PC Monitor – both which are quite expensive for most shoppers. Maybe people will finally realize why these TV’s are so cheap which is because they are being subsidized by the data they can sell off to the highest bidder. You can simply air gap it. Don’t let it connect to your network during the initial setup (or block it in your router settings) and use a 3rd party device like a Firestick. Edit: nobody is going to PiHole their fucking home when the average user doesn’t even understand basic networking. Susan from Milwaukee isn’t going to do this, so it’s easier to just tell her not to update her smart TV’s OS from the factory. Air gapping smart TVs removes an unnecessary UI which slows down the whole experience. Keep the TV dumb and use another input. It’s a nightmare to use a modern smart TV with all its bloatware. My in laws opted for this and it takes FOREVER to launch an app and the whole UX is extremely laggy. Firesticks are just as bad – they’re now auto playing video ads when you turn them on. Got an AppleTV a while back and there haven’t been any ads yet.
I have been using Google TV for years now and never see ads. I’ve enjoyed it so much I have one for every TV in my house as all I do is streaming now. Same. It works pretty flawlessly, especially combined with other Google products. My wife loves the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this hub max in the kitchen while cooking, she can watch TV and have 10000 different timers going at the same time. The only ads I’ve seen on AppleTV has been for AppleTv content, and it’s pretty unobtrusive and easy to ignore. No full screen video. It’s something I’ve definitely considered when i do buy a TV. But what does happen if you actually let it do a first time set up and update etc, then clear your wifi settings? Do they actively nag you to reconnect during active use?
My LG will annoy me to connect to the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this network on its homescreen, but I almost never see the homescreen if I don’t want to. Just leave it on HDMI 1 for my Apple TV, and use the Apple remote for everything. It’s a shame what LG did to their UI. It was fantastic with the motion remote. I bought a C2 and it’s basically like any other awful TV interface now. I’ve seen logs where they spam the fuck out of your router attempting to re-establish a connection to their servers. Like a mini-DDOS on your own network. That behavior is typical of pretty much every IoT device on the market. It isn’t an issue and it isn’t a “ddos”. I mean, it is coded to try to connect to a server. There is nothing malicious about it. Calling it a ddos just shows you don’t really know much about the subject other than what a ddos is. I think by DDOS he just means it’s jamming up the router. Although I really doubt it is unless it’s trying to reconnect thousands of times per second. I never connected my tv to the internet but have read horror stories where it will search for unlocked web access and connect itself. I live in the middle of nowhere so not too worried about that, but I wonder if this is truly an issue?9 I didn’t do wifi setup initially. Now I have a simple way for checking for updates. I just turn on the wifi, do the update, then immediately turn it off before I can forget. I don’t get the convenience of automatic updates, but I only do it every few months. So it ends up not being too annoying.
But why update it at all? If it’s not connected to the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this WiFi ordinarily, you’re probably not using anything that needs updating. Is this an Amazon ad disguised as a Reddit comment? You know that fire stick does the same thing as smart TVs do, right? They steal your data and sell it as well. I did a pihole once. I was constantly dealing with whitelisting stuff. Which would be fine if it were just me. But my wife would run into issues with the internet and is it the pihole blocking something? Who knows. Eventually it just wasn’t worth it. Hahah that’s exactly what happened to me! My poor wife, always trying to click on the sponsored shopping links during her searches that were always blocked haha
And that Firestick is doing the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same thing. Also, I don’t know about Vizio but my Samsung TV gives a lot of free streaming options. Like, you only really need to hook that TV up to the internet and you have more than what basic cable was from the 90s,and you put an antenna for local OTA and you don’t even really need a subscription if you aren’t picky about what you watch. It sounds like Walmart is talking about ads in those free streaming channels more than collecting data. This is why I run pihole on my network. Makes all of this a moot point. I never have to worry about IoT devices collecting my data Think of it like a black hole in your modem – all ads coming through your network are dropped into that black hole. It’s basically a DNS proxy you setup on your network and the point all your clients to use it for DNS. It filters out ads and spammy sites and lets legit traffic get resolved. Nice thing is it handles everything on your network so even things that can’t run Adblock will get stuff blocked.
You can add and remove sites from the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this list if you need to. My wife hates it because it prevents all the “sponsored” listings in Google from working :). I think most people run it on a raspberry pi, it doesn’t take much compute power. Or you can run it as a VM if you have a lab server, or whatever. I run mine on a Raspberry Pi 3. That’s because pihole isn’t an ad blocker. It blocks domains. If the ads get served from the same domain as the content you can’t block the ads without also blocking the content. It’s like this on many major sites like YouTube. Pihole isn’t a magic bullet when it comes to blocking content on your network. It does a really great job but it can only do what’s technically feasible.
Until it doesn’t. We bought a Samsung Smart TV about 10 years ago. By 5 years in they had discontinued all of the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this services on it, with no support and no further updates. I had to add a Roku stick for it to do anything other than be a dumb TV. I tried using my dads Samsung smart TV and the UI is atrocious. It is so ungodly laggy and slow it brought me back to the days I was forced to use the shitty Pentium computers in high school with 1 gig of RAM. The smartcast sucks, I just run my tv from my xbox on an hdmi input, but I have to fight the Vizio to get my OTA channels. At this price range, you can’t beat the roku TCL tvs. Which is a shame because the Roku interface was just the right amount simple, and didn’t have too many ads all over it.
….just connect a computer to the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this tv? Use it as a bigg ass monitor. Every tv in my house has a networked pc connected to it. The smartest tv, if you will. Old laptops or if you can get your hands on one of those HP Desktop Mini’s for a good price. Compact, low power draw machines with usually an SSD and decent CPU with integrated graphics. Use that to stream stuff from a central NAS server would be great. My HTPC in the living room is just my old desk beast (before my switch to sff for desk) 5 hdd’s and dedicated GPU, for couch gaming and vid streaming. My dedicated nas has 18tb worth of shit as well. Agree but that’s a non-starter for most people so they are stuck with these slow clunky interfaces as TV prices were a race to the bottom.
Besides games I use it to stream into my TV, keeps my TV super fast too because it doesn’t ever connect to the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this internet. With the added bonus that the Netflix and Apple TV apps stream with Athmos instead of the regular Vision of my TV app. Which goes great with my sound system. I’ve got a Fire Cube but my daughter wanted a Roku. I was actually surprised how much slower hers was than my Fire. Of course, it could be her internet or the model Roku she has. (I use Fire devices for Kodi) Yeah it depends on the model. The Roku stick is good but the cheapest $20 one is… Not terrible, but also not that fast.. I finally shut off the internet to my smart TV and it’s such a better experience. I used none of the smart features because of exactly what you said: the UI is slow and laggy compared to any dedicated streaming device. All my smart TV did for me was pop annoying pop ups up to tell me to update.
I don’t use any smart functions on my little 24” out at camp because there’s no internet/cell service so I use my Pi as a media player. The tv is such a POS. It will not turn on and go directly to last input used, instead it fires up the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this built in (SLOW)stupid amazon fire tv and then sits at the app/input selection screen telling me I have no internet connection… Just wait until you have to watch an ad on your car’s display before the engine will start…or you have to pay a monthly premium to not have your car display ads for other companies. Just buy the tv, don’t let it connect to internet and merely use it with hdmi connection to a device that does use the internet. 🙂 cheap tv Insignia from Best Buy – I’ve bought two and love them. Cheap and I just use a Roku stick and can upgrade if it needs it without purchasing a whole new set.
What’s funny is, I remember when Vizio first appeared in Wal-mart. They started as the Charles Wesley Godwin Feb 8 2025 KEMBA Live! Columbus, OH Tour Poster Shirt so you should to go to store and get this cheapest possible panel TVs, with zero features, and sometimes empty phantom ports that it lacks. Wild to see them go to a respected brand, then shift to advertising delivery. Walmart bought from these brands virtually for pennies on the dollar to sell as “budget” brands in their stores, and sales took off because, while they were lacking in latest and greatest features, they were pretty good quality for the price they were being sold for. Walmart doesn’t own TCL and also didn’t introduce them to the global market. Roku partnering with TCL to make smart TVs is what made them a recognizable TV brand, but they’d been a powerhouse in LCD panel manufacturing for a decade before. They also made a name for themselves selling phones under the Alcatel, Palm, and BlackBerry brands. I always love in these threads when this topic pops up and some guy starts talking about installing a PiHole on your network. Sure, like most people know how to do that, or have the patience to tweak the PiHole settings to not block normal stuff.
