And I disagree with your friends point. Even in France, known for a reputation of hating people like your friend, I’ve never met someone so in need of being efficient that they won’t tolerate a few words of bad French effort. I always as if people speak English in the local language. I don’t actually speak any of the local languages but I find people tend to respond better when I at least kinda make an effort. I absolutely would ask first. It’s polite – puts them in an awkward situation if they can’t and it’s presumptuous to assume. Disagree with your friend here. People like to practise their English, and its a small gesture that shows you are not some arrogant asshole American moaning about the lack of non-dairy creamer. Hmm. When I was in France for a week, I tried to speak French as much as possible, despite knowing literally only 7 words and 3 phrases. So even in a panic situation when we missed our train, I ran around the station asking everyone if they spoke English (in French) looking for help. I think it’s impolite to assume everyone speaks YOUR language when you’re outside of YOUR country. Would you think it’s rude if someone came up and just started speaking German/Spanish/Finnish/whatever else in America? I guess maybe not rude but certainly baffling and frustrating.

It’s an inefficient waste of time to start a conversation with a random person in a country where English is not official or widely spoken without asking them if they speak it first. English is not my native language and I obviously do speak it but in my own country if someone walks up to me and just starts speaking English.. it’s not exactly rude but I will definitely think “Oh this person thinks English is the Charles Omenihu Kansas City Chiefs comin’ shirt Furthermore, I will do this default language of every country, like we dont have our own language.” It is also a bit elitist. Where I am from, a lot of people speak English but more people than that do not. So behaving like you assume everyone can speak English is a bit like, assuming everyone in a friend group can afford an activity you want to do. Some people might not and it is just nicer to act like that is the default state to be in. Of course this is excluding certain circumstances, like others also said. If we are all in a tourist group with people from all different countries, or it is somewhere where you can assume people would be able to speak English.
