I can’t contain my frustration when I check in with students 15-20 mins into art class and they look at me and say, “What? I didn’t have a pencil.” Meanwhile there are boxes of crayons, markers, and color pencils they could have used. Figure it out!!!! ASK!! Try!!!! YES!!! I mean, I occasionally remind my 8 year old to put on clean underwear and socks, but beyond that? I could not care less about what he’s wearing. I was/am super into deathcore/slam/emo/skramz. My narcissistic mom (+bipolar) cut up all of my black clothes because it was depressing and I needed to dress like a “real” teen. Then made me cut my hair after living with my dad for years because I “looked like a girl”. Nothing like starting a new school, new town, my freshman year, and going from band tees and black shorts/pants, to only allowed Hollister style clothes. Bleached/faded jeans, white belts, pastel hoodies and shirts, new balance and sketchers. I wasn’t allowed to wear Doc Martens or Converses to school. Tis previous year 3 (9yo) I had a boy whose mother would tie his shoes and take off his socks for him. I’ve had pupils with actual disabilities who were more functional than that. Suggested looking on the next page. Told me he didn’t think about looking in the next page because i said to start on page # I had that happen too. My kids had to fill in notes from a multi-page PDF and even some of my more competent students needed help scrolling to page 2 when they couldn’t find the info on page 1.
I have to say as a new teacher, this is by far my biggest peeve. This unbelievable helplessness is exhausting. It scares me how these kids will try and function outside of school. This reminds of a physics lab I was teaching years ago. I refused to write their essays for them and I can only do 2-3 minutes of one on one time with each student MAX. So it’s basically me just repeating everything I said ten minutes prior all over again: “good. We are raising kids who have lawnmowers for parents. They mow down any obstacle in the child’s way, this means that the kid never learns any tools to deal with problems. Now they perceive they can’t handle a tough situation and shut down because they don’t know what to do. This makes them feel like they can’t control the outcome and they get depressed. The cycle repeats often which makes them pessimistic that anything can ever change.

I feel your pain, 5th here, my students are preparing to “defend” their right to go to 6th grade. I have some, when asked for an artifact of something they’ve learned I get “I don’t know” or “can you help me know this better?” To which I respond it’s your experiences. Only you can tell me why you deserve to move on. I’m also getting responses such as I don’t know in general. The level of laziness is unbelievable.Yeah, I had odd jobs from age 11 on.
