Jesus, this place sounds like a shithole. I’ve had a couple interns and when they come in I fully expect they aren’t going to know a damn thing. I’ve had one project manager complain about my process, but then all the regular employees on the team just dogpiled his ass and our Director basically told him to take that noise and blow it out his ass. I turned out a couple really good employees who are confident, knowledgeable, and skilled as systems admins, and the only negative that anyone has is that I’ve seemingly instilled my caustically deadly sarcastic wit in them. Although I maintain I merely honed it.

I do similar with every engineer that joins my team. My mantra is put in some time to figure things out for yourself but if you’re spending more than a half a day reach out. I think that says more about how organized the employer is and how effective their mentoring is than it does the talent of the intern. If the intern has to move the Earth to accomplish one small task, no one can really claim that they were set up for success. At my employer, the expectation is that the intern will get a senior dev as a mentor, work on some non-critical project (as you suggest), and there will be an overall slowdown in work output from the mentor.
