Smurfs cartoon in The US didn’t start until 1981. So at least 81. I remember there still being Evil Knievel toys and some fans. Those rubber bands in the masks would get caught in your hair and break easily and the vampire teeth would never fit your mouth cut your gums, small ass pumpkin pails for candy with shittly handles that would break. The year my friends and I used pillow cases was a freakin’ changer. Able to hold tons of candy, wouldn’t rip or tear, and we could just sling them over our shoulders as we walked through the neighborhoods. My parents would buy the cheap plastic pails from the 99cents store that were really big and had crappy plastic handles. I feel this movie is a extremely underrated. It was so creepy and scared yhe hell out of me. The sound track was fantastic. Watch this one every year. The scene where he throws the mask to cover the camera is hilarious to me but it took him an obscene amount of takes to get it I keep seeing people argue “no way this is the 1980s.” This is absolutely the 1980s. Those of us who lived back then will recognize these are Ben Cooper Halloween costumes, which were still sold at the time. You’ll see Darth Vader, the Smurfs, He-Man (in the back with dark eyebrows), and the Dukes of Hazard (stars and bars across the chest). This photo was likely taken around Halloween 1982 given the Smurfs and He-Man are present.

Ok I see a Superman and Raggedy Ann Darth Vader kiss who the Cat Hello Darkness My Old Friend shirt Apart from…,I will love this character behind the kiss mask person and is that he man or what’s that behind superman I don’t think that’s He-Man behind Super Man. With all the stars on the costume I think maybe Evel Knievel? Maybe? I can’t think who else it might be. I was always so grateful my Mother hand made our costumes in the 80’s. Everyone had this cheap crap and my Mother made my Frankenstein wig from fun fur herself, got a suit jacket from good will and puffed out the shoulders etc etc. I miss those costumes! The plastic mask that fogged up because of the tiny mouth slit, and then your eyelashes kept hitting the plastic eyeholes. The stylish dentist-style smock that tied at the neck and at (what I’d later learn was) the bra line. Don’t forget the always-too-big pants. And we’d all be more than happy to sit through a school day in basically garbage bags, just to show off our costumes! I remember how sticky I’d feel, but you never wanted to be the first kid to decide you couldn’t wear it for the rest of the day anymore! I was ALF one year at a school function, and the crappy thing fell apart on me. I was humiliated walking around in my undies and just remember the futility of trying to hold the pants up as they tore more and more. Eventually it was like trying to plug ever expanding holes on a quickly sinking ship. I was never so happy to see my Mom roll up in the station wagon (you know the one). I was born mid 80s, but Halloween heyday for me was 90s. Halloween in the 90s was still very good where I live.
