Was he a professional contractor? I’m not litigious, but no reason the kid should have had anything to do with this. He was a 19 year old college student. We were building stuff like that when we were his age and a dug out isn’t exactly a complex project. As someone who has heard this story (somewhat local to the area) since it started earlier this week, there’s a bit of backstory missing here. Yes, the dugout was unapproved, but not because it was necessarily unsafely built. The coach had built the dugouts because he said the bleachers at the city park were unsafe for his team and their parents. The city told him to take the dugouts down because he didn’t have proper permission to build on city land, not explicitly because of structural reasons In pro’s, it gets the name because it’s often dug a few feet lower than the field to allow for protection from flying balls/bats as well as better viewing angles for the crowd, and direct tunnel access to the locker rooms in many arenas. In non-pro play (little league), they’re usually at field level but surrounded by chainlink fence, although it’s the same protective measure, I just assume it’s also dual purpose as to contain the rabid middle schoolers who are known to try and flee such a boring sport.

Hahaha fucking spot on. This incident makes me think that the players took it upon themselves to build one, but didn’t go through proper channels to get a builders permit or to hire professionals, hence why they had to diamante it. This was a tragedy that could have easily been prevented.
