However … and here is where we got our lucky break … our guide got his friend the head biologist to give my husband and I a private tour of Iguazu Falls … when the park was officially closed. So, it was just the biologist, my husband and myself there for hours in the afternoon, soaking in all the beauty of the immense series of falls, the shifting rainbows in the mist, the exotic birds, the orchids, everything without a single other tourist there.
I thought that our guide frequently arranged such special outings at Iguazu, but he told us he had never done it before and we had just gotten lucky that day …. I had no idea at the time just how rare that type of experience is, because less than 5 minutes later we were surrounded by people. i accidentally showed up in Porto on the day of the festival of st. john. what a raucous evening that i fell into A bit dark, but – airport security was really enforcing the “liquids in a bag” rule, and I could fit 4 out of 5 things no matter how i configured it. So I left behind the toothpaste (cheapest) and the next day, went to a drugstore to replace it. This was downtown in a major city, so easy enough to do. 30 minutes after my unneeded shopping trip, a woman entered that drugstore and randomly stabbed someone, killing them. If I’d waited for one more client meeting to finish, I could have been there.
While in Athens a pigeon pooped and it landed right next to my boyfriend without getting on him.. I call that pretty lucky.. When I tell people I went to Lebanon everyone thinks of the war-torn media portrayal of Lebanon currently and how unsafe it must have been but that was the opposite of my experience.

I ended up actually staying with them in Australia for about a month a few years after that it was such a lovely experience and they are great friends to this day.
In 2022, my sister and I were flying to Louisville from Vancouver. Now, there is no direct flight to Louisville from Vancouver (it is such a pain to get there), but usually it is just one layover. This time, there were two layovers (three flights) which made me really nervous — so much could go wrong! The tour guide told me that in all his years he has never seen something like that. Costa Rica was so good to me.

We were relaxing one dreary morning and she ran out for snacks. She came back and said, “Um, you might want to come back out here with me. There are some cool cars.” We walked the 50 meters or so to Piazza de’ Pitti and see not “some cool cars” but a seemingly endless procession of the most exotic, rare, expensive cars I’d ever seen. Turns out it was the Mille Miglia. That year they just happened to be celebrating Stirling Moss, so there were no less than 3 (I’m thinking more like 5 or 6) Stirling Moss edition SLRs, one after another. For context, only 75 of those cars were ever made. It was so cool, even for non-car people.

Also scuba diving under some mangroves and seeing a crocodile basking on the surface while I swim underneath it.

I feel so bad for these sweet, warm hearted people having to go through what they are right now. Its an amazing place but the borders are usually closed now. It’s a total different experience in terms of VIP seating, free stuff, no waiting for anything.
