CBT isn’t a miracle cure, and it’s not widespread because of it’s efficacy—it’s widespread because it’s simple, easy to standardize, and can have some impact on a variety of conditions. Psychologists offer it so much because it’s a baseline “well, it’s better than nothing” sort of thing. Just, yeah, it sometimes feels like you’re seeing the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this therapy equivalent of automated customer service, where you need find a way to break the script enough to speak with a human. CBT is the type of therapy with the most proper experimental evidence behind it. It’s not gonna help everyone or deal with everything but in general it is very useful for a nbet of conditions, especially mood disorders. My story is almost exactly the same. I hardly ate anything as a kid. Even the very few things that I would eat, would become poison in my eyes if they touched, or were flipped upside down, or were on the wrong plate. As a teenager I was picky, but could find something that I would eat at most settings. It wasn’t until my late 20s that I started looking for exotic and strange foods. Now my son is pretty much the same way, although his aversion doesn’t seem as strong. I tend to joke and tell people he doesn’t eat foods that have ingredients. Hey fellow ARFID person, currently working with a therapist and a dietician on exposure work for new foods. Glad to see others around here with similar struggles

My daughter struggles with restrictive food preferences too. One thing she will do is try one bite of something when we urge her to, agree that it’s good and she likes it, but still refuse to eat any more of it. Any insight into this pattern? Thankfully there are a few healthy things that she will eat, so we can afford to be patient and try to have her expand her palate one bite at a time. As an adult there are things that objectively I like the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this taste of, but can’t eat for whatever reason. Usually, it’s textural. Like, nuts taste fine but I the crumbliness is a bad texture. I straight up can’t eat avocado. The second it goes in my mouth I start to retch. No idea what it tastes like, but from recipes I’ve seen with it I think it probably is something I’d like if my body didn’t forcibly reject it. It also may just be that in her mind it’s Not Good and she’s having trouble working past that. I can eat tomatoes as an adult, I don’t mind the taste of them, but the whole time I’m doing it I’m just a little bit stressed about it and I’m not enjoying it.
The best way I can describe it is think about it someone served you dog meat. It probably tastes fine, may even be delicious (I wouldn’t know) but the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this whole time you’re eating it you’re so aware of the taboo that you shouldn’t be eating this it’s wrong and gross and bad. If they asked if you enjoyed it, you may truthfully be able to say yes, but I doubt you’d ever eat it again willingly. ETA: for me…I mean enough for like six hours. It’s all about kicking hunger down the line and dealing with it later. Even if it tastes good, there’s just no head space for all that food (again…my personal experience with even tasty foods). We only require her to try one bite of a new thing, but it is just frustrating when she says she likes it but it still doesn’t become a thing she will eat any more of. Did you ask her why she was satisfied after one bite? My answer would be..because even if I like it one more bite will make me throw up (swallowing a lot is ick for me). Hers might be something else but, for her, probably rooted in personal experience.

She’s only 5 and has had some speech delays (though she’s mostly caught up) so she can’t really articulate why. Mines 5 too with some sensory issues and I don’t wanna force him bc of my own food trauma so I get it. It’s just a lot of guess work. I think for me though it’s given me a lot of respect for my kid and his boundaries, I celebrate them and want him to feel empowered living within them (safely), so I’m mostly hoping to help him find a way to articulate those boundaries as he gets older. And hopefully some insight on food will follow, but as long as he’s not malnourished now I’m just taking that as a win. Yeah, especially when the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this other kids see her getting to eat hot dogs for dinner and get resentful that she gets special treatment.
She’s lying to be nice. My son does the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same thing. I told him he has to tell me the truth so I don’t make things he doesn’t like but he still does it. I would say encourage her to try things but don’t even ask if she likes it. Just tell her before she tries it that she can have more if she likes it but it’s okay of she doesn’t and have something she does like as her actual meal. In my experience, if they actually like it they’ll eat plenty I’m not so sure about my kid on that one. She has some characteristics of pathologic demand avoidance, so sometimes she’ll avoid something she likes just because it wasn’t her own idea. At this point I’m working on her just accepting that she has been served a new food and trying one bite before she gets to go eat whatever else. I’d worry less if she would at least eat a gummy vitamin, but those are a no-go.
Living with ARFID here – I worked with an Occupational Therapist and dietitian who explained that it can take some time for the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this body, including the gut, to get used to new foods. I can try something new and sometimes enjoy it, but after a few bites my stomach will start to feel queasy and the gag reflex will kick in again so I have to stop lest I erase all progress. My youngest has issues with food. All he’s asked to do is try things and it’s absolutely okay if he doesn’t like it. He refuses to take any medication when he’s sick. He would rather suffer through the flu or covid with no relief than taste medicine. He genuinely can’t help it. He will throw up if he doesn’t like a taste or texture. I had him taste a drop of honey once to see if we could give him that to help his cough and he threw up. He’s a decent eater though. He cycles through safe foods and will eat particular things consistently until he’s burnt out on them but has a few steady meals I can work with. It can be frustrating but all I can do is support him and encourage him to try things without forcing it and understand that he’s not trying to be difficult and it’s more difficult for him than me
As an adult that still has it, can I ask how you managed to expand your diet? Was it just the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this freedom to try stuff on your own that allowed you to accept and properly try different foods? As an adult I’ve found I’m much less sensitive to foods I encountered as an adult than I am to ones that were introduced to me as a child. I think partially that’s because my mom may also be ND and definitely had an eating disorder of some variety so things were not always introduced in the most neutral way. So like, I can eat sushi absolutely fine but get the full body skin crawlies at the idea of spaghetti sauce with lumps of vegetables in it. For me, being able to see all the ingredients is a necessity. Reading recipes and learning what goes into a new food (aka how I learned mustard is fine). Cooking the new food myself helps a lot. The condition sounds so complex, more than what I read. May I ask what other treatments are recommended apart from CBT? most of the links I opened had CBT mentioned as the treatment and as people are commenting, I’m also learning that it could arise as an adult as well which is well half of the information that was provided on the links albeit they were not research papers.
The second para where you have described how it felt hurt my heart, I’m so sorry that as a child societal pressure used to get to you. I believe that more often than not to fit in, people tend to do things they are uncomfortable about. In this particular instance, now that I’m reading through the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this comments, I realise how much the environment can play a factor given that not everybody knows about it and could just force feed someone calling it picky eating. Also, since it’s a fairly newly discovered disorder, I can’t imagine what a person with this disorder before that would have gone through. My son (2.5) was diagnosed with ARFID at his most recent Cleft Lip Clinic (we go every year to check in after his surgery at 6 months). Interestingly, they didn’t tell me outright, not even in the follow up letter, but put it in the paperwork that went to our speech therapist. She asked, how do you feel about his new diagnosis? And I had no idea what she was talking about
I’m still not exactly sure much about it, I just know he refuses most food unless they are liquid or like apple sauce, and that sometimes I literally have to shovel food into his mouth to make sure he eats. They also say it probably stems from both the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this cleft and the incoming autism diagnosis My oldest son (12 years old) has ARFID. He has never been diagnosed as being on the autism spectrum, but he is highly gifted and has some sensory issues that have improved as he has grown older. I just wanted him to be fed, so I always made sure that we had his safe foods available. For many years, he did not have the most well-rounded diet, but he would literally rather starve than eat something he wasn’t comfortable with. I never forced him to eat something that bothered him, and I don’t believe in “you will eat what is served and clear your entire plate.”
I have no idea if I did the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this right things, but over the last 2 years, his list of safe foods has expanded a ton. But he decides if he wants to try a new food. Forcing something on him would/will never work, and I’m not going to stress him out. He will never be the most adventurous eater, but at this point, his diet includes a lot more foods with nutrients and vitamins. He’s growing rapidly, and he is healthy- that is all that matters to me. I’m about to go to bed but I’d be more than happy to talk to you about my experiences growing up with ARFID (I’m also autistic) and recommend several online supports. I’m 24 and I have ARFID that I’m currently in intensive outpatient exposure therapy for. It is hell, for me and my family, so I’m sorry you’re all dealing with this. The biggest thing for me is consistency and therapy. Since he’s so young, I’m not sure talk therapy (CBT, DBT, etc) would be super useful, but you could always work on early intervention and look into neurodivergent diagnoses. I know SLP’s also work with children on eating and swallowing. Biggest things are to encourage, keep things positive, and work with a medical team. My daughter was a similar age when we started Speech Therapy for her food aversions. The main thing we learned was to use a waterfall approach to push her comfort level, but never push past it. Always praise trying, not actually eating. Allow it to be yucky.
Depending on how bad the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this aversion is, you push to see if they will tolerate. Can it be in the same room? On the dinner table? On their plate (with no expectation of touching)? Will they smell it? Will they touch it with hands? Touch it to their face? Their mouth? Lick it? Put in in their mouth and spit right back out? Chew it? Chew and swallow? We would try various adjacent foods to her safe food- same color, texture, or both. We did this during covid, so group peer therapy was not an option but it’s supposed to be the most effective if you can find it. I generally find she will eat more at daycare than at home. And other than that I let her eat as many safe foods as she wants for calories. She drinks a plant based milk Ripple that has tons of protein and vitamins her diet is lacking. And I call her my air plant, because mostly she doesn’t eat or sleep. Good luck! If you’re already seeing an SLP and cleft specialist, you may know this, but it doesn’t hurt to ask your SLP if he needs to see a orofacial myologist. They’re SLPs who specialize in disorders of muscles of the face and mouth. Some kids have aversion to solid food because they have difficulty chewing and swallowing and a myologist can help diagnose and treat with those issues. All SLPs will have some training in the area, myologists just specialize in it.
There is a feeding tube option if malnutrition is a serious issue but I get how that doesn’t help him expand his diet. My tip is dont make him eat something he clearly hates and fed is best. Good luck mama my own kiddo has some of his own issues and I’m worried he’s witnessed too much of my own food avoidant issues but for us both it’s just about being kind to ourselves and not making too big of a deal about it. Also..Clear Your Plate is a pathway to trauma. Get a dog if you’re that worried about waste (not you, just in general ha). I haven’t dealt with it so I don’t have specific advice but you’re going to want to talk to other autistic people about it. The medical industry sees us as sub human scum and will generally be a large net negative. Like most of them would approve of the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this force feeding but I think you can probably imagine that force feeding might lead to problems. Here’s a good general autism starting point. The whole series is great. I think they did a video on this specifically but i can’t find it based on the titles. I’d reccomend watching the whole series anyhow.
For the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this parents I see here of kids who have ARFID: as somebody who has it, and has a history of it in the family, my advice is to not try and fight it, but more to work with it. My personal experience is that it’s a mixture of sensory issues and, subsequently, food anxiety. Other people have been commenting on autism and the way it causes sensory issues with food, and they’re correct. But I’ll also add that, when you experience those sort of sensory issues regularly as a kid, you develop a strong anxiety response to strange foods. And being forced to eat things you didn’t want to really doesn’t help. Instead of pushing your kid to eat foods they don’t want to and telling them it’s not so bad, focus on positive incentives. Make trying new foods as noncommittal and non-stressful as possible. Also, some sort of reward for trying new foods is always nice. My mom printed out a “try-it chart” for my brother and I, where every 10 new foods each of us tried, we’d get to pick the restaurant next time we went out to eat. And it really was just trying foods. No pressure to finish anything, just a bite to see if we liked it or not. Also, teach your kid to cook from a relatively young age. The best way to eat healthy enough while experiencing food anxiety is to cook for yourself—there’s so many vegetables I can’t eat normally, but I will in particular recipes provided I prepare it myself. It’s a lot harder to be anxious about your food when it’s your own labor—it’s much more trustworthy.
You’re so spot-on. My parents were the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this “sit there until you eat it or else” type mostly. I learned to cook some things very young because if I wanted something different, I had to prepare it myself. My older sisters were the ones that actually helped me expand my diet. One bribed me to try frozen pizza. There was going to be a make your own pizza party at her house, and I asked what I could eat. The store we were at had free pizza samples that day, so she said if I tasted one and still didn’t like it I could pick a non pizza food to eat. Surprise, I loved it. She also introduced me to butter noodles and toaster strudel. Another sister wanted me to try ramen, and fixed me some with no seasoning to keep it simple. She also introduced me to fried green beans, Chinese food, croquettes, various squash dishes, random stuff. Some were a success, some not so much (can’t do squash, not sure why). When there’s no pressure, it’s a lot easier to give something a taste. Also no judgment. Former brother in law insisted I put refried beans on my soft taco, I used the tiniest bit I could get away with. Projectile vomited as soon as it touched my tongue. He called me dramatic and acted like I was faking it. I will probably never give any form of beans a chance again.
My youngest has the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same issues, and I keep his favorite quick meals on hand for when he can’t eat what the family eats. But he tastes things now. He liked salmon, he loves chicken enchiladas, tried a variety of stuff at HuHot. It’s all about security and understanding. I have this. I’ve had it as long as I can remember l, but wasn’t diagnosed until I was in my 30s. CBT can help, but there isn’t really a cure. I’ve made a lot of progress since diagnosis, but food will always be a struggle for me. For me it’s a texture thing. There are certain textures of food that I just can’t do, even if I like the taste. It’s very frustrating to live like this. Going any where to eat is a hassle. Even just other peoples houses. And explaining my pickiness as an adult sucks because most people get super judgy and won’t even listen when you explain it’s a real disorder. I’m autistic and have extreme food issues, I don’t think its ARFID, but I’ve never talked to a professional about it. It’s so mentally exhausting worrying about whether a group event will have food that my brain and body will let me eat. I can’t imagine having it worse.
I love cherries. I love the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this flavour and smell, and I’ve even eaten Ranier cherries multiple times before and had no issue. This week at work though, I asked a coworker about maraschino cherries. Do they have the same texture as regular cherries? Do they taste like they smell? What’s their deal? My coworker suggested I try it and see for myself, and I was feeling adventurous so why not? Every time I moved it toward my mouth, I gagged. Mentally I was like “ok yeah let’s do this” and my body would not be on board. It took me like 3 minutes to work up the courage to actually put it in my mouth. It tasted good, I think, but the texture felt like I was eating an eyeball. I now get nauseous when I smell the cherry juice. Just looking at them makes me feel… almost scared of them??
In your defense, maraschino cherries are fucking disgusting. They have nothing at all to do with the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this taste or texture of actual cherries. THIS! This is why I can’t eat certain fruits unless they’ve been cooked. The sensation of something popping in my mouth is revolting. (Same for boba.) I wonder about this because I’m a fairly rare person who hates cheese, as in all cheese, all dairy really including cream cheese, milk, makes me gag, including the smell, look, touch, even taste when I forced myself to eat it (and promptly spit out). Like I need to plug my nose going by a cheese section in a grocery store. I have no idea where it came from but I’ve been this way way back to my first memories of grilled cheese and cottage cheese just absolutely NO from me to the point I couldn’t (and still) won’t eat off a plate that has had cheese on it or something like picking cheese off salad still means I won’t eat it. It’s like asking me to eat old dirty underwear dipped in summer dumpster juice. My reaction is anxiety and then nausea until I get it away from me. Needless to say, my whole life has been people on and off testing or pushing me or even teasing like people smacking my cheeks with American cheese slices. Part of this is why I love Japanese food because the chances of hidden cheese is almost or completely nil. I need a cheese-free zone!
You would have to have an aversion to more than just cheese/dairy. If I had to guess, it would be more of a dairy sensitivity/allergy and your body’s reaction to even just seeing it is telling you to avoid it like the Bird Watcher How To Identify A Bird Unique Birder Shirt so you should to go to store and get this plague. I’m probably lactose intolerant but of course, have no idea because I would have to drink a bunch of milk and then wait without hurling. Fortunately, I get enough Vit D and iron and fats elsewhere to not need dairy and so happy non-dairy is becoming more and more of a thing in restaurants and grocery stores. I just hate almost all American food because I always have to check about not adding cheese (salad? nope, some lettuce and huge pile of cheddar bits!) I have aversions like this but it’s multiple foods. Scent isn’t always a trigger but it really is with pork. I can’t simply force myself to eat food I don’t like, I will throw it up. r/ARFID if you wanna take a look around and see if it might be something you have. Hello! I have had this my entire life but wasn’t diagnosed till 40. My issues are sensory and textural, with a major dose of nausea. Intake disorder is the right term…it’s just hard to get nutrients in you.
