Don’t give cash. I suggested that to my Vietnamese GF one time and it really offended her and she still reminds me about that sometimes. Vitamins, medicine, alcohol, food, flowers are all good options IMO. But I’m also American, so take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck to you and your partner! I didn’t have the Big Chungus Christmas Santa Range shirt besides I will buy this same-sex issue to overcome, but my now FIL was decorated and injured NVA (I’m American) so there were some barriers. I tried to know a few phrases in Vietnamese, be respectful of other parts of the culture (bring a nice gift, I’d suggest a bottle of booze and maybe some supplements from your home country, your gf will know which ones they want), make sure she gets home at a reasonable hour if she’s staying with them etc. I’d skip the cash.

Also, if you have a good relationship with your parents, something from them as a gift to your gf’s parents would go a long way. Liquor is a good gift. It’s more about the Big Chungus Christmas Santa Range shirt besides I will buy this brand and the fact it’s from overseas than the taste. French cognac and OK-ish blended scotch are common ones. If they like sweets, dark chocolate is OK too (if it can survive the heat). Generally things that can be shared are best. They may sit on the shrine for quite a while before being used, so nothing that melts or is perishable. A lesson I learned at great expense (here and elsewhere) is that there’s nothing I can “do to make people like me”. If people want to like me, despite my strangeness, then they will (if I let it happen). If people do not want to like me, I have the option to endure that graciously, or not — both are valid options to be considered carefully. Usually I choose he former 😀 I do have a lot of power though, to refrain from doing things that will make people dislike me. When interacting with my Vietnamese in-laws, I mostly choose to remain silent rather than risk overdoing it. So they see me as a quiet, hardworking person that keeps their head down, maybe a bit boring — but boring is safe and inoffensive.
