If you go through the number of times in a year for any given industry, it is very rare for the actual artist or the service provider to cancel, change or postpone and it’s no big deal most the time because they get the person in fairly quickly after that BUT if you let it go all naturally without deposits, there would be literally dozens of times if not hundreds per year where the customer forgets, changes their schedule, etc which would not only inconvenience the service provider but prevent other people on the list from getting done more quickly.. Deposits were designed 100% for the service providers and NOT for the customer.

Mild shock! She tried to get a refund on her deposit, but they insisted on giving her the tattoo. After rescheduling failed three times, she was about to take legal action to get her money back. Of course, they magically had 3 different appointments available, all perfectly good for my wife. That sucks but it also shows you it’s not your artist. I had same happening to me at the beginning of the pandemic, minus the deposit. Got a date and then radio silence for 1,5 month. One week before the appointment I reach out to the artist asking to see a sketch. She responds on the eve on the appoinment saying that they decided to close and the appointment is not going to happen. I was very pissed, but thought that mutual respect is the part of the process for me, so let it go. The tattoo artist who gave me the four I currently have lost his shop and had to work out of his home. I got my last one in his kitchen while he renovated his basement into a proper tattoo environment. A few months later, he paged out to lots of people that he was giving $1000 of tattoo time for $350 deposits. (Red flag, anyone?)

I recently saw his name on a list of tattooers at a local popular shop, but I don’t have it in my to pursue it further. I have been communicating with a tattoo artist from overseas for a year and he agreed to take on my project when he tours in the US. Finally the time comes and he’s staying for a 3-day tattoo convention on the other side of the country and he’s going to work on my arm all three days. It’s a full tattoo sleeve. Everything is paid for. Hotel, flight, entry to the convention, time off from work booked. 5 days before I’m supposed to fly out, his assistant emails me and says that he has decided that he is not going to take on my project because he wants to focus on smaller projects he can get done in a few hours. This means that they had already been communicating with other people with smaller projects for god knows how long and they waited until 5 days before to tell me that I’m SOL.
Also, if you were able to book an artist only 2 weeks out, that tells me they probably aren’t very good as tattoo artists worth their salt usually have a multi-month wait list. This has happened to me. When they cancel there’s no excuse to not get your deposit back. A couple of weeks ago I left a shop with $600 in my pocket because they took a walk in and tried to bump me. That’s just unprofessional and your “business” wont last long if you’re treating your customers with no respect. Go into the shop while they are with a customer and demand your deposit back for them breaking their appointment and taking your money. This will put them on their heels since they will want to save face with their current customer and any other patrons in the shop. They should give you the deposit back just to get you out of there.
It’s so annoying when stuff like this happens. I just recently had a bit of a similar experience. The tattoo artist was running a voucher offer which basically equated to discounted hours if you bought a voucher for certain increments of money, as they’d had a slow period and I guess wanted to churn up some custom. I bought a full day voucher (which is 6hrs). A few weeks later redeemed my voucher and booked a day to go and have a few smaller things done. A few days before my appointment, they contact me and ask me to come in later as they “accidentally” booked another small tattoo before me. My session should have started at 11am, they asked me to come at 1pm. Very annoying, but ok i guess. I arrived at 1pm and this other persons tattoo app has overrun. Ok, even more annoying. First one, does the 1st tattoo, then has to draw up the second, tattoos that and then the next one. My final one, they spent an hour drawing it up, started it, then at 8pm was like we’re done here. So at this point, 2.5hrs of my appointment have been spent waiting for designs to be drawn up (when the usually it’s done before the app) but was told they didn’t have time to draw everything up due to them having to take up an extra job as they’ve been so slow over Christmas and the new year. Which is sad for them but I’m paying for this service (and it’s not really my problem you’ve had to take another job, as sorry as I am you’ve had to in this crappy economy). Right throughout, they complained of being tired and achy hands, sore eyes which absolutely did not fill me with confidence (tattoos have since healed as it’s been a few weeks and there are definitely some wonky/incomplete lines). Then even worse, the next day they message me asking for date to complete the half done tattoo and asking for more money which I’m not about to do. I should have just postponed but hey ho, lesson learned.
