My grandfather lived his childhood off of 1 meal a day from the local maharaja’s choultry, which were very common, in the early 1900s. Do a hell of a lot for the homeless community in London too. More than just a plate of good, nutritious food, they take the time to engage with those they’re serving. I’m fortunate enough to help them get their hands on leftover produce from some cracking restaurants, and they never fail to put together some astonishing meals! Taking nothing away from our awesome sikh brothers, its an Indian tradition. Its followed across multiple Hindu temples, many mosques and churches, and even those places with mixed religious heritage (yes, its a thing in India. And as noted, it’s all vegetarian, not because eating meat is necessarily against Sikh dietary restrictions, but because they want to make sure that langars can accomodate as many people from as many faiths and cultures as possible. Truly great people. Edit cause I wanted to add some more info: It really is an “all are welcome” arrangement. No one is turned away and people from all races, religions, creeds, social statuses are all treated equally. Owing to this equality aspect, when you go to a langar, everyone eats on the floor so no one can be seen as above or below anyone else. Learning about Sikhism in that class was definitely a highlight and I encourage everyone to learn more and maybe even visit a gurdwara one day
