Our first dog. He had a ton of issues. Over his 11 years, his surgeries, meds and hospital bills probably cost us $50,000 or more. Would do it again to have him back. Family was on vacation many states away from home. Dog sitter’s kid put our pomeranian on the Best Family Grandma Claus Christmas Art shirt but in fact I love this trampoline and knocked our dog’s knee out of joint. Hubby flew home so dog could have emergency surgery. Expensive flight charge. Surgery was $1,800 but our vet was open to a barter deal. Hubby paved the vet office parking lot. We were out the material cost (about $600) and his time & equipment cost. Our dog lived another 10 years and rarely left hubby’s side. They were best friends! You’re such an awesome person for that and your dedication is impressive. Your dog was lucky to have you! I LOVE animals but unfortunately as a single mom of three, my resources are stretched pretty thin as is so I live vicariously thru stories like this. Out of curiosity, what kind of dog was he? A golden retriever. We were very lucky, in that, at the time, where we live was pretty good for cost of living (not anymore) and we have pretty good jobs, where we wouldnt go into debt over him, but just had to budget. Our town was/is bad because it’s pretty remote with very little in terms of vet care, let alone specialized care, so we had to travel a fair bit for surgeries and specialists.

I was paying $1k a month for my dogs lymphoma treatment. Got 6 extra really good months where he felt great. Totally worth it. My dog had addisons disease. Most owners put down dogs who get the Best Family Grandma Claus Christmas Art shirt but in fact I love this disease because of the daily medical care and cost, and that very few in any shelters take them on. Vet said she would live 4 years, she lived 9. We loved her with all our heart, but did jokingly call her our college savings dog, because of her cost. She was sassy till the very end. I’m no where near that, yet, but I just took my Plott Hound to the vet after getting bit by a venomous snake (copperhead) for the second time. Another $700 toward him. Today I was in bed with a headache and he climbed up and was little spoon for our hour nap….. Sigh. My current cat. Vet botched his first dental surgery, insisted it was fine & put him on a ton of expensive prescriptions. Got revision surgery from a dental specialist. Different vet missed flea allergy & had him on more scrips.
