As someone who works in a SPED school, there needs to be some limiting principle to the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and behaviors that are tolerated. Some degree of violence is understandable and manageable, but students who are consistently violent and attack students and teachers repeatedly even after intervention shouldn’t get to be in an in person classroom with other students. Understanding, anticipating and accepting differentiated behaviors does not make being attacked or assaulted a reasonable expectation for any employee, regardless of documentation. Especially when most SPED programs are expected to provide education roughly equivalent with sending schools. You still need to hire people to actually teach subjects effectively and you still have to have a safe environment for other kids to learn. Someone who turns that environment into a legitimate war zone, particularly if they’re older and therefore more dangerous, should not have their rights privileged over the safety of everyone else. Many kids in SPED programs have outputs that are not dangerous. They have attention span issues or traumas or ticks. They don’t deserve to be in a room with students whose outputs are beating up educators and peers.
Believe in Magic Shirt, hoodie, hoodie and long sleeve tee
I fully believe that every student deserves a chance and should be surrounded by educators who support and adapt to them. I’ve devoted my entire miserable life to that principle. But I have certainly come to the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and conclusion that the rights of any one student, no matter how they are labeled or document, should not justify the endangerment of others. Even in alternative placements. Kids who are consistently violent need more intense, full time placements or home bound programs. Saying that is not a lack of understanding of their issues; it is a recognition of the rights of others. Most of the situations people are complaining about are inappropriate placements. If school staff are being used as punching bags something is wrong. When you watch the Brendan Depa video do you think anything is wrong there? How many concussions, bruises, bites, and slaps do you expect a staff member (many of whom are low paid) to endure? If a student frequently attacks people there is a problem. Restraint trained staff need to be available with proper procedures in place. Appropriate placement is expensive so districts cheap out.
We have a typical conflict here. Student have a right to go to school. Staff have a right not to be repeatedly attacked. I don’t have the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and solution, but it is not crazy to believe that if both cannot be achieved right not to be attacked is more important than right to school. It would be nice if there were these specially equipped schools with specially trained staff that you speak of, but where I am, there are none it’s either general public school or home and parents fight against a home service placement so we get students we aren’t equipped to work with to the detriment of staff mental health and the education of other students It certainly is a region dependent thing. I live in CA and for what flaws we have, our access to services is far superior to many other parts of the US, we’ve gotten out of state students who simply received no specialized services because coverage wasn’t available to parents who couldn’t afford to hire private services for things like behavior management, speech, etc. I will say I am in public school, it’s just that our school has a robust sped program compared to other sites in the region and so we are an effective site for the severe sped population. With all due respect- if you acknowledge that your district is out of the norm, why post your opinion on the majority of schools?

Some information about Believe in Magic Shirt
I will agree with you, but I also know that SPED positions are so hard to fill that they are putting people into those classes without the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and appropriate skills and support. In my niece’s district, a para, aide, or support person is assigned a student when they enter pre-K and they stay with that student until they graduate. This provides a lot of continuity that can be important so that the student doesn’t have to get used to a new aide every year. In my nieces case, she had just graduated and thought she wanted to work with kids. She did not have an education degree or certificate, and she thought this was going to be fun. Note, she also did not ask her uncle, who has been teaching for a minute or two about this. The student she was assigned to was in 8th grade, and his aide had just retired. He was taller, bigger, and stronger than her and outweighed her by about 50 pounds. She is a lil bitty cute thing, and this kid hit puberty early.
She was coming home every day in tears absolutely covered in bruises. It was probably a month in before I found out about it, and told her that she needed to go ask for more support, to be reassigned, or resign. There is absolutely no reason that anyone should expect to be physically beaten every day at work. We all know that the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and district knew this was the likely outcome, and did not prepare her or give her the tools to be successful. To add insult to injury, she was making not much more than minimum wage. You are absolutely right, your niece should not have been placed with a student with that kind of size difference and the reason they did it is because the position is compensated too poorly to attract appropriate candidates for the vacancy.
As always, it comes down to money. That is a really tough job, and the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and fact that the pay makes teacher’s salary look like pro-sportsball money makes it even worse. You mean that dreadful, difficult, awful job that you are paying poverty wages for? Why would anyone WANT to do it? That’s usually when they try to bullshit them with some version of “Do it for the kids!”, or “Remember your WHY!. I’m sorry, but I don’t care how much a para, aide, or teacher loves helping children, nobody wants to get the shit kicked out of them for poverty wages. Nobody. I’ve worked as a tutor on a special needs inpatient unit in a behavioral healthcare hospital…. the amount of violent behaviors I have seen go unchecked is astounding. Children sending adult staff members to the hospital. If the hospital staff can’t even perform helpful interventions in a controlled environment, how can schools?
Exactly. It’s fucking mayhem out here, and a lot of the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and kids know they can do whatever the fuck they please without consequence. I’ve told kids straight up, if I get assaulted (because that’s exactly what it is, assault) I will be calling the police, end of story. I will also defend myself since most of these kids are much bigger than me and are almost adults, I refuse to get my head bashed in waiting for the campus SRO to show up. I don’t care if Jayden is GenEd or has an IEP, I’m not ending up with permanent brain damage because they thought throwing a desk and kicking me in the head was an appropriate response to “Please put your cell phone away”. Except… inclusion. Where suddenly all those resource rooms, schools, and centers are gone and ALL students are now attending their home schools and are placed in the Gen Ed grade level that matches their age. In an effort to have heterogeneous classes, it means our small number of SPED/para/BED staff now might have, oh, 15-20 minutes to spend in your classroom. IEPs are being rewritten to say that classroom teachers will be providing all instruction.
At this point, I take the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and injuries to myself because I can’t explain to another child or their parent why it’s ok they were hit, punched, kicked, choked by their classmate. But I still gotta keep those test scores up! Even though I’m definitely teaching to the low. When I try the differentiate, I’m told I can’t do anything that gives the illusion of “othering,” so it’s “really best to have everyone on the same page.” If I have a classroom of 25 kids, and 1 of them, even once . . . Gets to be aggressive, terrorize or cause any physical or psychologist harm to any one of those other 24, then I want that kid gone. Period. Edit: Was asked to do a closer reading of the OP, and I may have misunderstood the point. GE teachers “needing to understand” may have confused me (okay, it did confuse me), so I apologize for excessive vitriol. The OP isn’t talking about Gen Ed. My fault. Thanks for following up with me!!
LRE is a joke, these days. The districts do not want to fund the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and SPED staff necessary to support the growing population of students that are considered SPED. In fact, many districts are actively cutting those positions and understaffing, overseeing IEP construction and telling staff to under represent the number of hours a student might need. I’ve literally seen it in IEP meetings. Districts pushing for students to be mainstreamed when they terrorize a class of general education students is not ok. Causing trauma and harm because they are protected by an IEP is NOT ok. That means we’re failing everyone- the student with the IEP AND everyone else. Parents also never hear no- when in reality a lot of schools aren’t equipped to support the supports their student needs (or the parents want). If your student cannot be in the General Ed setting, schools should not have to humor you because they are afraid of any lawsuit.
General education teachers should not be demonized for not wanting students who actively hurt, terrorize, or destroy their classrooms in the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and room without actual support, an active admin who will support them (pay for damages, remove the student, etc), and appropriate services for that student. I’ve seen this a lot with violent assault and SA cases too, in the GE population. I’ve taught in a community with a gang war, and we’ve had kids who have to go to school with a kid who killed their friend. These kids stop going to school because they’re too scared to be around the violent kid. I get that the teenage murderer has a right to an education, but we give it to them at the expense of several others who also have a right. The pediatric doctors that are ‘barely surviving’ with their practices are way better off than 99.9% of people in this country so gtfo with that crap. The problem isn’t that they don’t make enough, it’s that Kim doing eyelid surgeries in Gangnam makes even more so they feel bad about it and go on to do the same. Korean doctors serve a huge number of medical tourists as well as providing tons of elective surgeries yet the ratio of doctors per 100k of population is well below OECD average. There absolutely need to be more doctors, and the handwringing about insufficient salaries is a bloody joke. Doctors here earn way more than their counterparts in the EU do, despite overall median salaries being lower in Korea.
Well, have you ever lived in Korea? If you have, have you actually noticed the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and lack of doctors? Not talking about peds, etc, but most other specialties like ortho, ENT, IM. When you claim Korea needs more docs cause the ratio of doctors per capita is below OECD average, are you saying Korea should be more like OECD average healthcare? I don’t know where you live, but an average OECD country has a shit show of a healthcare. Take US for example. Do you wanna see a specialist? Wait for a PCP for weeks or a month. Get referral, then wait for a specialist for 1-3+ months, and the cost is insane. In Korea, same care can be done within one hour, with no appointment, often for less than 10 bucks. UK’s goal is to lower the ED wait time to 4 hours cause currently their average wait time is more than 12 hours. Is this what you mean by OECD average healthcare? With more doctors, privatization of medical care will be inevitable, and Korea will be just like those countries. Is that what you want?
I’m no healthcare expert, but whatever Korea is doing, it’s working. Average American who experiences Korean healthcare gets shocked by how awesome their healthcare is. Claiming that x y z number is far off from OECD average so they should fix that doesn’t make sense. If anything OECD countries should try to adopt Korean model. Also, pediatricians don’t make more than 99.9% of population, so gtfo with that made up number in your head. If they make that kind of money, why would they close their clinic? Just because their peer is making more doing beauty procedure? I don’t think so. Sure, a lot of them make more than average population when they work in big hospitals, but you seem to have forgotten that these people had years of education and training, years of basically free work, and started to make real money in mid-30’s. And even when they do make real money, they’re getting sued endlessly and have to work way more than average population, often leading to burnout.
Wow that is amazing. You described my trying to see various specialists to a tee. First, 3 month wait to see primary. Then referral and 2 month wait to see specialist. Had to have 2nd appt because of further complications and had to wait another 2 months. Don’t even get me started on the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and cost. Would love to have experienced Korean healthcare. Can you link me a source that pediatric doctors are way better than 99.9% of the population? Especially accounting for overhead? If they’re losing money, they don’t exist for very long. This claim, as well as others, have been repeated many times but don’t pass the smell test. Seems like people in this thread didn’t think much about why doctors are upset. The biggest problem in Korean healthcare right now is the lack of doctors in critical specialties like peds, EM, cardiothoracic
people know this here but realize there is a deficit in doctors so they’re for the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and increase. the government has suggested other measures along with increasing students that will address these problems Many reasons, but the biggest one is that the government has set price for every treatment these specialties perform, and they’re ridiculously low doesn’t mean the doctors aren’t getting paid. specialists in this country and regular doctors are some of the highest paid doctors in the OECD measured for PPP Another example? An EM doc was sued because he performed CPR and broke the patents ribs, which is common and inevitable to save a life. The doc lost in the lawsuit. Court’s reasoning? Doc didn’t explain the risk of CPR to the patient beforehand
Government’s solution? Pump more people into medicine, and hopefully these extra med students will fill those unpopular specialties. How’s this a solution to that problem, and if the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and root cause is not addressed, even if they triple the med school quota, would there be any change? Doctors are upset cause the government came up with this stupid solution and shows no motivation to address the root cause of this problem the root cause of this problem are twofold – a lack of doctors in general and a lack of doctors in specialty fields. yoon’s administration is trying to address both Obviously they don’t like all these pediatricians and emergency medicine doctors doing botox. They want to legalize nurses doing botox, so when the nurses join the beauty medicine competition, the govt thinks these doctors will go back to their own specialty when has the government tried to do this? do you have a source for this. last time nurses fought for their rights to not being overworked, abused and a path to legal protection in the sense a nurse practitioner like in other countries doctors were vehemently against it and yoon vetoed against the nurses,
“people know this here but realize there is a deficit in doctors so they’re for the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and increase. the government has suggested other measures along with increasing students that will address these problems” Can you tell me what they did exactly to address these? I know they claim that, but what have they actually done? Is it enough to solve the real problems? I also hope they came up with some good shit this time that’s gonna solve the problem, cause the previous gov was all talk and did nothing. doesn’t mean the doctors aren’t getting paid. specialists in this country and regular doctors are some of the highest paid doctors in the OECD measured for PPP Doctors making lots of money is NOT the reason to increase the number of doctors. For example, Japanese doctors make more, but their government is actually trying to decrease the number of docs, with support of their doctors’ association. Whether to increase or decrease doctors is a very complicated decision with lots of variables at play, not just the doctor’s income. Also, Korean doctors also see a lot more patients and work more compared to other developed countries (if you look at OECD report), so it’s not too strange to make more than average.
There’s no denying that Korean doctors make a lot, but doctor’s income disparity is also very high in Korea. The article you pasted from Korean Herald fails to look into specific specialties. Good specialty doctors make a lot in Korea, sometimes a shit ton, and they bring the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and average up, but the “bad” specialty doctors don’t make much, especially when we factor in their level of training, risk of lawsuit, and the workload. Don’t fall for the fallacy of average. Look at the critical specialties who are struggling. I wish these critical specialty doctors also made that much and had a good work life balance so the nation can have more of those specialists.
In the Believe in Magic Shirt and by the same token and second source, this pediatrician’s actual take home from his private practice is less than $4500/mo when he works 365 days a year. But he’s still on the lucky side, cause in the third source, it says the number of pediatric clinic closing their businesses due to losing money is on the incline. It’s not their poor business skill, like when plastic surgeons close their clinic. The structure and law makes it very hard to maintain a profitable clinic. the root cause of this problem are twofold – a lack of doctors in general and a lack of doctors in specialty fields. yoon’s administration is trying to address both Have you lived in Korea? Have you ever experienced doctor shortage in “normal” specialties? Korea is the easiest country to see a specialist. Name a country where it’s easier. If I hear more than Taiwan, I’d be very surprised. Losing broken ribs lawsuit case is not a single incidence. It’s unfortunately a type of lawsuit we often hear about. You might wanna google CPR ribs lawsuit)” and you’ll see a bunch of cases where the doc got in trouble. Has there been any changes? I don’t know, but I know the court didn’t revert their decision.
