>The interstate highway system is a wonderful thing. It makes it possible to go from coast to coast without seeing anything or meeting anybody. I travel by two lane roads when I can, and consider it a success when I don’t see another car for 5-10 minutes. I’d turn right in Michigan and drive across the bridge to the upper peninsula and across to Minneapolis. We have a friend in Chicago that we’d like to visit. Seen a lot of recs for the upper peninsula though so maybe for a future trip Well, if you are coming from Boston, you won’t be a stranger to traffic and idiot drivers. My wife and I have made 6 or 7 cross country driving trips. You can’t pick a route that won’t have something that will amaze you. Have fun. 2 – 1 – 4 – 3 for my personal preference. I’ve done the exact same 4. 3 is ok but if you’ve already committed to Colorado just stay on that route don’t drop down. 2 is great better winter driving AZ going through Colorado in the snow can be very slow. 1 is fun, I really like that route, not the quickest but I enjoyed it. It depends what you want to see, and when. The northern most routes are nice, but the rolling plains In Wyoming etc go on forever. Rt 4 through Nevada you need to prepare for, it’s desolate. Water, food rations, desert survival stuff, spare tire, etc. Just in case. If you’re unsure about a route, or tied between two of them. You still need to drive back home. Go a different route than the way you head out

In the Beer is my full time job i’m retired shirt and I will buy this portions of routes 1,3 and 4 that pass through the midwest that aren’t urban are part of the Great American Corn Desert or “Flyover country” to the urbanites. From the OH/PA line to midway across Nebraska, a thousand miles of nothing but corn and soybeans. Having spent my entire life in this vast field, I look forward to seeing different crops in the field or heaven forbid, trees and hills. Actually once you’re past West Virginia, there are way fewer toll routes. You’re looking at close to $100 in tolls following the lakeshore across Ohio into Indiana and Chicagoland. It’s August. You want to be as far north as you can. Take the green route, hit up Yellowstone and maybe consider going a teeny bit further north to hit more of Montana. Take North Dakota instead of South Dakota if necessary. — it only adds on a few hours, at that point. OR: don’t book hotels in advance and plan to camp or find a hotel each night (there’s plenty of places along interstates that you can get day-of reservations for a good price.) watch the weather and pick the coolest route.
