Nope, all the Ballroom Blitz Sweet Shirt and I love this anxiety and other suffering is the placebo effect. The etymology is off, because placebo should make you feel more pleasant not more unpleasant, but you get what I mean? All the day to day stuff like traffic or other people’s behavior doesn’t cause us to be anxious and miserable, but we believe it does, so we keep on being anxious and miserable. Meditation shows us that’s our mind causing its own suffering, which is great news, because it means we don’t have to keep doing it! A long-term practice will bring you through lots of phases that change your life in so many ways. Sometimes it’s painful, but if you’re doing it right, part of you will know that underneath the pain, it’s all good. Some people experience a kind of “dark night of the soul” that sounds like they lose touch with that knowledge that it’s all good. If that happens, get a teacher! Dark night is not a requirement, so why stay there if you don’t have to? It’s like exercise– a good workout can make your whole body hurt, but instinctively, you know it’s good. An injury hurts in a way you instinctively know is not good. If you get some painful days, feel into it for that distinction. In my experience, the pleasure is incredible and outweighs the pain. Thank you for your practice! We all need each other to make this human experience as beautiful as it can be!

I experienced a dark period of time after I started meditating. It wasn’t just senseless pain though, I knew in my heart and soul that all of it had to come out. I couldn’t keep it in anymore. That was simply not an option. It was better to go through it than to keep repressing it because I realized that would feel even worse. I didn’t end up getting a teacher for a number of reasons, but what I eventually figured out was that I was doing almost exclusively (what I thought to be) insight meditation without anything to actually anchor me on my physical sensations without getting carried away in stories and indulging the Ballroom Blitz Sweet Shirt and I love this pain. There was something intoxicating about being able to drive so deep that I didn’t consider that I also had to come up for air. Once I started doing that I slowly climbed out.
