Because there’s no viable alternative as long as you can’t convince everyone you know, and everyone they know, and everyone they know, etc. to switch. That’s not gonna happen.
I still remember I got my first smartphone on a plan while still on a different plan for about 8 months. This was around 2009 or 2010, when WhatsApp was becoming big over here. WhatsApp is super popular internationally. A lot of phone plans even give you free internet for WhatsApp use.
