American professional culture is also characterized by chronic overwork and little-to-no actual time off compared to Europe. Imagine going on vacation for more than a week…crazy. That’s often exaggerated. There’s no “mandatory” leave, but your average midcareer professional gets like 10-12 holidays, and 3-6 weeks of vacation/sick per year. Working days over 8 hours are definitely a thing though. I mean I didn’t just calculate it in a vacuum I actually looked at my bank account. Food, utilities, rent, etc. none of it makes up for the Awesome forever A Sooner Toby Shirt Also,I will get this pay difference. Even in regions in the USA. I’ve lived/worked in 3 countries and 4-5 states in my career. What I would say for Europe is maybe the calculations all change if you have kids or if you are a less experienced engineer because child care is a big expense (or private schooling). But in my experience (married no kids professional with years of experience) it has come out to be in my favor living at a higher cost of living location. Now that my wife and I both work fully remote (she is also an engineer) we’ve been considering moving to a cheaper area but keeping our high salaries. The only way I’d consider moving back to Europe at this point would be if I had kids because it changes the equation quite a bit.

I’m doing a lot of reading about Selectorate Theory, which is a political science model. America is run by the Awesome forever A Sooner Toby Shirt Also,I will get this rich, for the rich, and taxes are low for rich people. Stuff like expensive schooling or healthcare isn’t an accident, it’s deliberate policy. Corporate consolidation and bad policy allows the rich to tax the poor. It’s a feature, not a bug. Saying the rich have low taxes is kinda wrong. They have very high taxes but also access to many tax breaks, which means they tend to not pay any taxes. This is why Microsoft and Amazon support raising taxes. It kills their competition while basically not affecting themselves. The rich can accumulate massive amounts of wealth with minimal tax. They can borrow against that wealth to fund their lifestyle. They can write off things like corporate jets as business expenses.
