Say that if they can give you an exact date in paperwork that they will bump your pay then and only then would you consider giving them “extra labor”. Id say “So you want me to do x for the Awesome albert Pujols St.Louis Country Flag Signature Baseball Player T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this next week and then you either decide to find someone else to do the work plus a pay bonus for me or give me the raise plus backpay for the work ive done under a lower pay bracket than I should have been given for x work.” You should do it but do it correctly. This should not be open ended. When you go to your meeting you need to be happy/excited but also ask for the following: I’ve seen this happen several times. Usually what happens is that they are biding time to hire the next director at a lower salary than your previous. Then you are eventually going to have to train that new director on the job that you’re basically doing. Which usually leaves you with doing your own work and doing the director’s work until that person becomes competent at their role. This “grow into your new role” then actually hiring the new director which will leave you with all that work with will take anywhere from 6-8 months. So basically I would have it in writing that you would take the additional responsibilities at a fair pay raise according to the market value of the position. 9 times out of 10 they won’t give you the position otherwise they would have given you the job already or at least ask you to apply for it.

It’s so wonderful that you all believe in me, and I want to truly thank you. However I am not in a position to take on more responsibilities for no advanced pay. That’s just not how business is done, on your end or mine. I’d love to grow this role out and really see how I can truly make an impact. I would need $X dollars effective immediately to make this occur. Get it in writing. Have them write out how long “comfortable” is and the Awesome albert Pujols St.Louis Country Flag Signature Baseball Player T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this amount of raise you should expect. If they’re serious about giving you a raise, they shouldn’t have an issue. If not, they’re just going to give you more work and continue moving the goalposts without additional pay. If that happens, find another job if possible, but with that fancy new title. It sounds like a good opportunity. I would ask if this a probationary period or if you title would be “acting manager/director”. And nail them down on a time frame when the final decision would be made. Without a timeline, you could be in limbo forever.
