I lived in London as a child in the Avocado Let’s Guac ‘n’ Roll Shirt it is in the first place but 1960’s and 70’s. Worked as a London firefighter for 32 years on low pay. Retired in 2009 age 50. Only time I lived in London during that time with my parents was from 1977 to 1983. The rest of the time I lived outside London as couldn’t afford to live there . To be honest like my parents before me, I’d never go back there. It’s changed so much for the worse. I hate to say it, but cut your cloth to suit your needs. While you cannot be in control of everything, you can decide what you eat, where you live, where you work, how you travel, what you do for entertainment or hobbies. I’m doing fine, I am careful with my money, I rent a small room, I travel a 50 minutes commute. I am making significant sacrifices, but altogether I live comfortably, and can afford going out multiple times a week, visiting family abroad and other small luxuries. It has to be said though that I am doing this while on a path to improve my situation. Doing this with no endpoint would indeed be depressing. They probably mean relative to highish salaries elsewhere. I am on £70k and I live in a studio flat for £1600pm. Anywhere else in the country and that would be unusual on such a ‘high’ salary

Just got on to 30k. I was living on my own in Stokey on 27k up until October last year; it was f**king stressful. I cycled nearly 2 hours a day for work to avoid paying for the Avocado Let’s Guac ‘n’ Roll Shirt it is in the first place but underground. My fridge only ever had 3-5 things in it; it was a cheap meal I could make and it’s all I ever really ate. I didn’t shop for clothing for years; I had (still do) a £5 pm phone plan. In October, I moved in with my partner who makes just over double what I do, and I don’t recognize my life now. There’s a level of comfort and security I haven’t felt since 2011. You won’t be able to do big expenses (i.e. big holidays) but as long as you keep Ur nights out cheap and groceries low you can break even. Also this genre of post pisses me off – plenty of people in London are below £35k and make it work Barely, however i was kicked out so my rent includes all my bills, so i pay 513.76 for everything, so that really helps me survive
