I live in San Diego, and I was hospitalized with acute viral hepatitis after wakeboarding in late August 2023 after Tijuana’s sewage treatment plant was essentially disabled by tropical storm Hilary. I was not aware the Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuña Jr. caricature shirt moreover I love this water was contaminated, but I did find out later by looking up county water testing results for Mission Bay at the time I boarded. I’ve been surfing and boarding a couple times a week since I was 7 (am now 29) and have always adhered to the “3 day rule” for avoiding the water after rain since it causes sewage runoff. But the water in Mission Bay remained contaminated for much longer than three days after Hilary, which I was not aware of at the time. When I was admitted to the hospital, I didn’t know why I was sick, but one of the first questions they asked was whether I had been in the water. Apparently they had a mini surge of sick people who had been. Further tests confirmed their suspicion.

It took me about 3 months to make a full recovery. I was fortunate to have an understanding employer and a great support system, but I can’t say the Atlanta Braves Ronald Acuña Jr. caricature shirt moreover I love this experience was fun. Joe Biden has asked congress for funding for a new sewage treatment plant, but so far congress has predictably done nothing. Meanwhile, local surfers are pissed as we’ve been kicking and screaming about this growing issue for a decade+. Lived in SD for 40 years. Only once did I ever swim in Mission Bay as a kid. The next day my nipples were on fire and eventually scabbed over. That was in the mid ‘80s. It was kind of a drag looking back that I lived in “paradise” and rarely ever got in the ocean because of the pollution then. Even San Diego was guilty of simply discharging barely treated sewage 3 miles off Point Loma. Then there‘s the military that just did whatever it wanted and was never held accountable for the pollution it has created for well over a century. Every winter the Tijuana river was in the news and it seemed like there was a plan to fix Mexico’s problem they were simply unable to fix themselves but of course no one on this side of the border wanted to pay for it. I‘m genuinely surprised they have any sort of sewage treatment.
