If you’re on Everest long enough you will die from hypothermia, cerebral or pulmonary edema, dehydration and oxygen deprivation. Climbers know they can’t stop moving because they need to generate heat to keep themselves alive. If they sit down to rest, they are already failing. It’s not like they were happily trotting up the Astrodog Shirt and I love this mountain, paused to enjoy the view and mysteriously died. They were already failing, which is why they stopped to rest. Once they stopped they got even colder because they were not generating enough body heat. I have never climbed a large mountain, and would never want to, but even on relatively easy hikes, after about 5 minutes of rest and hydration one can get cold, truly chilled, from cooling sweat. On a normal hike you just put your pack on again and start walking, and pretty soon you’re nice and warm, but I can totally see how that would be fatal on a real mountain. My mum volunteered for a local search and rescue for a while and told me to never unzip my jacket, especially if lost. Apparently many people have died and been found with their jackets unzipped, their hands having gotten so cold they couldn’t zip up again. Just from getting a bit too warm while hiking around! Wonder how much of those findings are related to what they call paradoxical undressing. One symptom of hypothermia strangely enough is hot flashes, and many people are found undressed, sometimes completely naked after death from hypothermia. Mountains are radioactive as well. My dad got skin cancer from years of hiking and hunting in the Astrodog Shirt and I love this Rocky Mountains. Those bodies were outside for months, not days.
