TikTok says it’s okay, just keep making videos and once the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this girls hit 18 make an onlyfans. Who needs to have any value to society anymore? It’s a struggle down the earliest grades. Mainly with eroding attention spans and the meteoric rise in learned helplessness. Thank goodness my district still invests in mandatory CS classes for K-5. I’ve seen more than one KDG student come in trying to pinch-to-zoom on a piece of paper. Some of these kids just don’t want to do anything. If it requires more than a modicum of effort, it’s “boring” or “too hard.” Many struggle to follow even single step directions — they want someone else to do things for them. They can’t for the life of them follow along with guided projects that include step-by-step picture & text instructions.

I try and take an interest in what students are up to outside of school. I’ll ask what they did the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this previous evening or weekend…”Played my Switch”, “watched YouTube”, “played on my iPad” have got to be the 3 most popular answers. Way too many have unfettered access to the internet at home. It’s just pathetic how lax many parents are with tech at home. Commenting as a parent to a 4 year old entering pre-k this year, hold out hope. Myself and the other parents my age I know are trying! We are not a privledged group either. I’m working with my daughter on phonics, writing, basic addition and subtraction. She knows how to write her name, her address, what her mom and dads names are. I am a young parent and I have seen firsthand through my own childhood how smartphones and social media changed kids and I plan to continue educating at home when she is in school.
I teach elementary and it’s because they’re forcing us to teach kids insanely complicated things. I’m in 3rd, where they basically stop learning to read and start the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this focus on reading to learn waaaay too early. I’m trying to force them through 4 paragraph essays one stupid sentence frame at a time because god forbid they explore creative writing and editing and focus on spelling tests and stuff. Our curriculum basically guides them towards all writing the same Dang essay and they don’t even know yet to capitalize their sentences and I have no time at all to focus on the true basics anymore. They ask these kids sit for 3-4 straight hours of what is essentially lecture courses with a few turn and talks thrown in to pretend they’re engaged and each day we write one sentence of an essay that is basically all framed for them and all they have to do is plug in a few words and voila! An essay is done after two months and the kids still can’t write.

They spend all of math futzing around with the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this tools on the iReady program because the workbook only has them practice like one problem per day and discuss it ad nauseum and no one can multiply after 3 months because they only will use a multiplication square from the book and won’t spend a single second doing a calculation like 3×6. I ran one of our reading assessments through a level checker and it came back at 10th grade so no wonder they’re all failing here in 3rd, they’re staring at a 10th grade level worksheet because “rigor” and getting nothing out of their education and therefore can’t even understand the same dang worksheet once they’ve reached 10th grade. And if I give ‘em an extra recess bc they’re 9 years old and bouncing off the walls, well, I get reamed bc instructional minutes matter even though their energy is so high we might as well all be beating our heads against the wall instead of barely even pretending to grasp the complexity of our ELA curriculum. I may be totally wrong but I think kids are burned out before they hit 5th grade. They have an hour a night of homework in kindergarten and don’t get to just be kids. I also believe this is why people are so mean now. They never learned just cooperating and being kind. Just because a lesson is done over it doesn’t mean they really learn it. I say give the kids a break- no desks in kindergarten. Only centers and book time and counting time and colors and art. When I taught preschool I had parents of 3 year olds upset their child couldn’t read yet. We aren’t letting children’s brain take him to form.
What can be done now? Discuss with admin? Address school boards? The last time parents got super “passionate” at school board meetings, they were labeled domestic terrorists by the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this DOJ. That doesn’t exactly leave people feeling like there’s an open door policy to come forward when things don’t seem right. And things really DON’T SEEM RIGHT. It is mind boggling how this seemingly trickle down crisis has overtaken our education system. Zero accountability for students, parents, admin, school boards, politicians, etc…except for teachers, who are held to frighteningly unrealistic standards. Pushing kids through in an effort to keep numbers looking good, so that money keeps coming in. Appeasing parents so no one gets offended…lying about students true grade levels in the process…it’s just all wrong. All of it.
As a band teacher, I feel this. Either the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this kids can play really really well or they are freaking clueless. I know what would make a difference in bridging the gap, mainly more (or any) at-home practice, combined with private lessons or at least more one-on-one tutoring… the first of which requires more buy-in than a lot of the struggling kids can muster, and the latter funds (either from the school to hire more help or from the parents to sign them up for lessons). But in the meantime we have a band that has a core of 15-20% of really awesome kids that can play like crazy, a very small group or maybe anywhere 10-20% that are borderline and another 60-70% that are pretty clueless and just along for the ride.
How about going old school? Before students are allowed to use any device, they can write their name, alphabet, and numbers. Writing sentences? A student asked me what was 16+16, I told them 32 and was asked how I knew the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this answer so quickly. I said when I was in school, we had to practice learning fact families just like they were learning except we had to write them. People want to blame the pandemic even when this was happening before then. Now, some students benefit from technology. Not all students are ready, though. I teach 4th grade in an urban area. Almost every single student in my class reads at a K-1st reading level. That means letter sounds for a lot of them Just because they know how to use their phones does not mean they know how to use a computer. They are not familiar with common keyboard shortcuts. They also cannot type properly. Some students type using their index fingers. This has been the general population for all of time and will likely continue to be the case. Hardly anyone can do adequate information research.
The data contradicts this sentiment and as educators we are part of the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this problem if we don’t base arguments on learning, reason and evidence backed information. I mean yeah. I never learned geography because around 2008-2009 the state of Texas decided that it wasn’t necessary because it wasn’t on the standardized tests. Students are taught to the tests, if it’s deemed unimportant then it gets skipped. Phonics aren’t taught and neither is sentence diagraming, as far as the system is concerned students don’t need to be able to read or comprehend at higher levels than what it takes to answer questions about reading passages. It certainly doesn’t help that a LOT of focus in the 2010s got shifted to pumping out as many STEM kids as possible, often contributing to an attitude of “Why would I need to be able to read Dickens, I’m going to design rockets.” (Real quote from a guy in my class in junior year of high school, he got a NASA internship that summer)
I wrote one research paper in all of my time in middle and high school. One, because on the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this AP tests and SAT/ACT you would need to rely entirely on memorized knowledge so as far as teachers were concerned doing any outside research was cheating. Doing the research also would’ve required the teachers to take us to the computer lab or make us use our own technology because the school didn’t have enough Chromebooks for even every other class to have a cart. Teaching us how to research became one of those things that fell to the wayside because we didn’t need that skill right now, it wasn’t in the curriculum, and we were already behind by a week (We were always somehow behind by a week, in every class. No clue what that was about, I got written up for disrespect the one time I asked what we needed to rush to make time for.) so proper research techniques became “something you’ll learn in college”. My university had 2 first-year writing classes that were specifically to undo these teachings because coming out of high school even students strong in English were incapable of writing a proper college essay.
I graduated in 2021 which meant I got the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this dubious honor of living through teachers trying to decide whether phones were the devil or a useful learning tool and each teacher had a different answer. Technology classes basically taught us how to use Microsoft Office and I know the year after me was the last time my elementary dedicated time to typing. The tech industry has also shifted to apps because frankly the worst enemy of IP is a user who can open a config file. There’s a strange sort of mini generation between Millennials and Gen Z who were taught how computers actually function and everyone else has just used technology all their lives, which can often appear at first glance to be tech literacy. That’s not their fault, it’s a very intentional move on the part of companies in order for them to make more profit (Why let you own a program on your own computer with a one time purchase when through the app you can make them pay a subscription?)
A lot of other things often deemed unimportant or common sense won’t get taught because they’re a waste of time or it’s just assumed their parents will teach them and nobody thinks anything of it until they have an entire generation of adults who don’t have signatures because cursive was deemed useless to teach 15 years ago. Stuff like reading analog clocks too, as well as time zones. TLDR; Next time you wonder “why are kids these days lacking in this knowledge” ask yourself, is that knowledge on the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this SAT? This is, in part, as a result of not kicking out the students in class who are disrupting the class and holding everyone else behind as a result of having to be dealt with incessantly. The whole idea of “Every student in school needs to pass! Every student DESERVES an education!” needs to go out the window. No, not every kid is academically well-adjusted, and they do not deserve an education at the expense of every other kid in the class who genuinely wants to learn, but can’t thanks to them. I remember some poor kid who was in the 8th grade at my school, who had the education-level of a third-grader. He dragged the entire class down for two months, before the staff at the school kicked him out, telling his parents that he needed to be tutored individually and privately in order to get him up to speed; things went back to normal after that. This was 35 years ago. There would be hell to pay now if a school did that because of politics, but when you see public schools and teachers today already stretched to breaking point, I don’t see how you have much of a choice.
Yes, there needs to be specific programs for these kids who are struggling academically; there also has to be functional families backing them. As a teacher of little ones, I can say that even in 1st there is a large difference in our classes. Either students are ahead, or they are behind. Very few are right on grade level (with our benchmark testing). Problem is, those kids who are behind have parents who say, “you have them all day at school, I’m not working with them when they get home” and also refuse to allow their child to be retained, so they get pushed through to the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this next grade, even if they aren’t ready. In my specific area our county had a push to teach reading using a whole language approach instead of teaching phonics and decoding skills. They’ve now decided that the whole language approach does not actually teach reading skills, and now the push is for us to teach phonics and decoding. The problem is, those kids who went through when we “weren’t allowed to teach phonics” (if you weren’t teaching whole language when they observed you, you would get in trouble for not following the district mandates) missed out on practicing decoding skills that are extremely important. Given the number of adults in their 30s I’ve encountered who can’t do all of those, or even half, I’d say this isn’t new, but it may be accelerating.
A while back I found myself having to explain a paragraph to someone in their 50s that was written at a 5th grade level. One sentence in past perfect tense and they were totally flummoxed. And the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this public won’t know because grade scales are being tweaked nationwide to make it almost impossible for students to fail. With our current scale I have a student who has done 1 out of 6 assignments and they’re passing with a D. In no way is this a true reflection of this student’s abilities. Same in the early 90s at university. The kids in my English classes lacked the ability to write, for the most part. And before someone slams the ability to write well as ‘elitist,’ realize that writing is a function of thought, and good writing usually indicates a mind capable of complex, nuanced, and subtle thought. I used to think it was the fault of the education system, parents, etc.. Now, I know that pollutants can cause these learning disabilities, in the third generation after exposure. The food some children get at home is 100% processed, and many households regularly eat the same. No wonder.
When I was growing up playing computer games needed a degree in computing, or sheer will power and determination to play. I was 11 when Rayman 2 came out and I got to a bit in the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this game where my graphics card didn’t support the opengl shader so I couldn’t see the platform to get to the next area. I remember it so well because I had to learn how to disassemble a DLL file to inject a new texture – all of this using ask jeeves and only being allowed on the Internet between 6 and 8 pm otherwise it was expensive. Took me 2 months and a reformat of windows because I changed the boot screen based on some forum post along the way which bricked the whole computer and lost everything. To cut a long story short – it’s too easy to play games now, half of the fun was getting it to run, and the bugs, and the terrible Internet.
Now it’s just fortnite match after fortnite match with no effort. This optimisation of the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this experience is horrible. Admin and higher-ups don’t realize that when everyone passes and mediocre crap is acceptable, they are creating an incredibly boring environment. There’s no point for these kids to develop any discipline, pride, or motivation to do well. They know they will pass so they don’t even know what it feels like to accomplish a goal or have interesting classroom conversations. They know that if they complain or act out they are rewarded and get to feel like they accomplished something. Yet if they work hard and meet a deadline they just see all their peers turn in the same work a month later and get the same result. In fact, they probably watch their peers turn in nothing, treat others with disrespect, and destroy lessons and still end up in the same classes with them the next year or they are that kid.
It’s hard to know what it feels like to struggle through something, talk through different strategies and ideas, and push your thinking when you have never had to go to those lengths to accomplish something. It’s like playing a game of basketball where you can just walk around at a slow speed, have opponents who just get out of your way, and then the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this hoop is 3 feet lower and 2 feet wide…you’d win every time and it’s boring. Then imagine doing that over and over and all of the sudden you have to play Michael Jordan. You’re probably going to complain that it’s not fair and probably get a bunch of accommodations so you can still win but you didn’t really do anything to improve your skills. Anyway, this is the world that is being created for these kids and until something major is done we are going to be playing this shity game of basketball.
Imagine forcing undereducated 16-20 year olds into parenthood with no support and no ability to leave bad situations and being surprised that the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this consequences happening exactly as stated when they were told at the beginning what the consequences were. Teachers shouldn’t have to fix situations like this by themselves. As a parent, my question is why are these kids being passed to the next grade? Back in the day these kids would have been held back. A high school diploma used to mean something. Nowadays they’ll give one to you even if you get straight F’s. Is this because of No Child Left Behind? I don’t get it. My kids do not use capital letters. They can’t find the verb in a sentence. They can’t remember what I said at my desk by the time they get back to their seat. How do they get passed to the next levels? I failed all of middle school and had to go to summer school every summer to get moved ahead but I could still do all of that. Wouldn’t it be better to keep them behind until they learn?
you don’t need to train kids to be at the Arizona Sports Shop Snoopy Arizona Coyotes Arizona Cardinals Phoenix Suns Arizona Diamondbacks shirt in other words I will buy this top when you can just import the brightest minds from 3rd world countries. america even makes them struggle really hard to stay here and they still keep coming. gen pop can all be illiterate and it literally does not matter. at all. like seriously, it’s hilarious how little it matters. And let’s champion academic ownership. Admin doesn’t want to hear my voice teaching—the students should be running the class… but…. -Tie an overhand knot -use a hot glue gun -draw with sidewalk chalk (this one was WILD). I had astronomy drawing planets with distances to scale. They’d draw a huuuuuge planet and then start coloring it in extremely densely such that they were out of chalk by about 1/10th of the way through… and it was taking so so long. We ended up with terrible looking half densely colored, half blank planets. They just had zero concept of how much they should press to shade so it didn’t use up all the chalk and it didn’t take a year to color. My two year old can do this….
