I am confused your question is why somwbody that is gifted with above mental abilities has below average non mental abilities? Isnt that all our lot in life. There are things we are good at and things we are bad at? I found school very easy especially things like math, physics economics…but am so bad at a lot of things that are not logic or strategic related that it is often comical for my friends and family or my colleagues. Worked with a woman who is super smart but has, as she discovered, a slow processing speed. It took a while to get used to the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this pauses before she answered, but the answer was always right Does she do a better job than you? “Everything became a race to be done first” doesn’t mean it’s also a race to do it correctly or better. Not every outcome is judged by speed.
Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt: A Unique and Creative Design
While I was in college I took a part time retail job. My supervisor in the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this stockroom was a guy I went to high school with, and this was his full time job. After a few days, I was asking questions how to do this or how to do that, and he asked “why do you ask so many questions, are you stupid?” No, I wanted to do the job right ASAP and not have to ask him questions again later. And if I knew what I was doing, I would be faster at it as well. He expected me to learn by simply doing it, which might make me faster and better over time, but it takes longer and I would have to make errors along the way to figure out what to do or not do. That’s funny I guess everyone has their strengths. My wife has 3 masters working on her doctorate. Calls me this morning because she needed help putting air in her tire. My BIL absolutely a genius softdev. But an absolute ignoramus in every other area of life. Depending on when your wife grew up, a lot of honors student learning had nothing to do with day to day application. I also was an honors student (and G&T, Mensa, etc.) in Upstate/WNY and we got lots of schoolroom training and almost nothing for practical application.
I was gifted as a kid. They put me in advanced classes from a young age, I never had to try very hard to get good grades, when it came time to study for the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this SATs my best friend worked her butt off for an average score and I spent that time messing around on YouTube and playing with her cat and recieved one of the highest scores in the school. I didn’t have to work hard. So I didn’t. Now, as an adult, I struggle to start anything I’m not sure I’ll be exceptional at because if I fail people will think I’m a fraud. I have a ton of anxiety and never really learned time management, and it turns out people don’t actually care if you’re smart if you’re not brilliant. So, that’s a lot of it. I can’t speak for your wife, but I can tell you this is pretty common for “gifted” kids to grow up to be slow moving adults.

Speaking as an ex-“gifted child”, being smart only gets you so far. There comes a point of diminishing returns where good study habits and hard work get you significantly better returns. If someone gets those habits down early, being a high academic achiever is easily achievable. Slow and steady wins the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this race. The more you rush, the more you’ll fail, and she clearly understood this principle. When I open any package. A box of cereal, a package from Amazon, a TV dinner – it looks like a 4 year old did it. just because you are book smart doesn’t mean you are book and street smart (meaning you have a firm grasp on how the world works and how to solve unexpected issues) its honestly crazy how dumb some people are, while having a literal world of information in their phones
There is different types of intelligence. I think I read somewhere that there’s 7 different types. I can’t remember them. One of course was emotional intelligence. Just because someone is intelligent in one area doesn’t make them well suited for others. An excellent example of this can be autism. Some are great at math but are incapable of understanding the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this simplest things outside of that. Some people just have a distinct lack of hustle. My wife is like that. She has an almost pathological aversion to getting stuff done quickly. She’s brilliant, and works in biotech, but if the house was on fire, she would take 20 minutes to get out the door. I’m the exact opposite, and I chalk it up to working construction from the time I was a teenager until I changed careers at 29. To me, any sort of task that isn’t inherently a leisure activity, from building a house to cleaning the kitchen, is work, and I want to get done with work as quickly and efficiently as possible so I can just be done with it. I don’t want to take it easy, and have a few breaks, I just want to knock it out and be done with it so I have more time for more enjoyable things.
I worked with a guy who had a degree from one of the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this top, Ivy League universities, and he could hardly function an office situation. Like all Booksmart zero Street smarts used to drive me crazy because I had to pick up the slack on everything. It was doing all the while our boss was in love with the fact he went to that particular school. I dropped out of high school and my wife went to college. Neither of us are genius level intellects but she is awful at dealing with things on the fly. The things she knows she knows VERY well, but the things she doesn’t know she is particularly awful at. I dated an IB/AP girl for 3 years in high school. She couldn’t drive, didn’t know right from left or cardinal directions, and could not tell you the difference between pie and cake. Could do calculus like a mother fucker, though. I graduated high school with a 2.4 and one of my teachers told me the only reason she passed me because she never wanted to see me again.
I’ve been incredibly successful in my adult life. And it’s because I’m wise and I have street smarts. I can think for myself and I can question authority. I have incredibly good logic skills which is probably why I didn’t do well in high school. I was too bored and knew that they were teaching us shit I was never going to use. Being an honor student means knowing how to study and manage your resources. It doesn’t mean that you’re fast. Doesn’t surprise me at all that she’s methodical. Ever heard “Slow and steady wins the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this race”? Check with Aesop. I always find that some of the traits that can make someone excel in one realm, can cause the opposite to happen in another realm. we like to think of ourselves as “smart” or educated, but the way in which those traits work for us, can also hinder us when applying them to tasks that have other specific skill sets required. You sit in class, are told exactly what you need to know, are given appropriate homework assignments that are clear and direct, with set timelines, and ability to focus on one task at a time, among a number of other things. Basically school offers a ton of structure, support, and clarity.
The real world offers a lot less of that. Problems are vague, information is scarce, and there’s no authority figure guiding everything from beginning to a conclusion. Also, remember, we all aren’t exactly who we were at age 16 forever. The person who did well in school at 16 might fade, while the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this person who struggled might mature and become a “better” person. I think the misconception is that academics prepares you for life. Academics mostly teaches you how to be best at your discipline and how to be well-rounded from a multi-disciplinary perspective. That said, great teachers will push you to be critical thinkers but not all classes are designed to elicit critical thinking, especially if the teacher or professor isnt encouraging that.
Personal life also has way less guard rails than school does, and the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this responsibility you have (finance management, raising kids (if you have any) and household chores) isn’t something that’s often provided through school. Learning soft skills like interpersonal relations and stress management for life stressors it’s something ppl often have to learn on their own. The valedictorian for my HS was famous for accidently driving onto some train tracks. She was fine, but book smarts don’t always translate into real world smarts. I was a honor student, took advanced classes and college courses in high school. Even graduated early. 10 years later and I’m pretty fucking dumb now lmao. Without the structure of classes/school I am not very good at learning new things unless I hyper-fixate and those usually involves things that aren’t like a big deal.
I find this can be the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this case when people over complicate things. Additionally some people see everything in micro detail. So you see a picture, they see pixels. I’d say the thing you can do is help with filter creation. So this person has difficulty prioritizing information. You’re driving down the road and there is a store sign, which is more important the store sign or the stop light? This type of prioritization. People who have not had to make their own life decisions, people who have been sheltered etc…they never had to develop that basic filter set. The wording here is just kind of to the point to help you follow what I’m saying. No disrespect is meant to anyone. Sometimes really intelligent people are so intelligent that they get in their own way. Simple tasks elude them because they are used to operating on complex tasks. They may question why this button makes the coffee go, or if there is a better way, or they may overthink it(start could mean start the machine, or start the coffee process, or start a cleaning cycle, etc). They may be working through other things at the same time, or they may have conditioned themselves to multitask and struggle to focus on a single, simple task. I’m no expert, though, and this is just based on my observations. Basically, being incredibly smart means you aren’t particularly focused on simple solutions and tasks. Different kinds of intelligences. The absent-minded professor trope exists for a reason. Great at the theoretical and understanding it, might lock up at remembering which hand is supposed to be holding the spoon.
Women process information differently. Men are task oriented and typically take the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this most direct path to any problem or task. Sometimes this is great–sometimes it isn’t so great. Women generally think about problems or tasks longer because their mental paths are less direct, which typically means they are considering more. Sometimes this is great, too–sometimes it isn’t so great. Stated alternatively, there are strengths and weaknesses in everyone’s approach. A good manager maximizes the teams value by taking advantage of everyone’s strengths, getting the most complete picture and the most efficient path from stakeholders who, together, provide her/him with everything he/she needs to know to solve problems correctly or get things done properly.
I know total idiots from high school who became doctors and lawyers. These were the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this same kids who would climb out the window during class and drive to Burger King. Stumbling across them on LinkedIn and seeing their job titles is just absolutely jaw-dropping. My 11 year old gifted daughter is infuriatingly slow with the most basic tasks of everyday life. She performs top level in everything else in matters of academia or creativity, but just the act of getting dressed or taking a shower eats up the clock at an unacceptable rate. I will never get used to it. Book smarts and “street smarts” don’t go hand in hand. Plenty of people are one or the other. Generally school is memorized and repeat or “solve the problem within this well defined set of boundaries” where the real world is a complex mess of combinations. YTA. Everyone has strengths and talents; and everyone has areas that don’t interest them, that they do not concentrate on developing. Our position on the neurotypical/ autism spectrum is what allows us to focus elsewhere than on what interests us, or what allows us to be caught up in the game-ification/ competitiveness of a situation, NOT our intelligence.
I was a great student. I got a job at my college cafeteria and was the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this slowest person working the dish conveyer belt…by far. Book smarts/education has nothing to do with common sense or practical life experiences. I’ve known some very highly educated people that are barely capable of keeping themselves alive. Same with my wife! Straight A student, expensive private schools, good career, can efficiently focus to complete her work, but literally does not know how to complete everyday household chores, check the mail, do dishes, etc. People have to be trained to think. Classes/ schools train you to do one thing with a limited set of variables. The moment the number of variables increases people can get bogged down.
The solution is parsing the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this task into steps or even micro-steps and completing each step pausing only to make sure the next step is needed. Microsteps: Stretch, Stand up, Start walking, Head to kitchen, Find pot, Add water, Find salt, Add salt, Add heat Boil water, Check if you have spaghetti otherwise substitute. Heat olive oil, Add garlic, Find parm cheese, Add cheese, Throw pasta at Wall to check for status, Find/ parsley add parsley, Drain pasta , Combine . Sometimes people need micr-steps to get started and keep going. The thing is every time you complete a step, you get a little burst of satisfaction that can keep you going without pausing It’s the way their brain works. I think, they think linier. They only think in a one subject at a time. Like a math problem, the start at one end and work it to the end with no deviation. Usually they can’t work well with their hands or are overly physical because they cant make their hands and body do what their minds imagine.
Yes they are instructed differently. School is all about the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this mind. I am sure she excelled at school because she was a “good” student. It was easy for her to understand everything they threw at her. Once you become a good student, they continued to teach at/to her. It’s not that it was a different school, it’s just they would teach her differently and more favorably. Here is a test, does she have an inner-voice when she reads? Most don’t because they were taught not to have one or never did. I have the same problem. My wife is on the genius scale, president list, fifth in her class, full ride scholarships, several degrees, Hates movies/tv but will play games or do puzzles that I have no idea what they even are. She can’t cook, can’t clean, and I have no idea how we had kids because she just doesn’t understand sex. She loves to drive and thats scary because she doesn’t see the way things work around her. No, she isn’t competitive at all. Intelligent people don’t always possess common sense. Just because someone is book smart doesn’t mean they have critical thinking skills that help them with everyday mundane tasks, this can stem from over thinking things a lot of the time.
Taking it slowly is often the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this best way to do it right actually. I know a lot of people who go very fast and while they may look like high achievers, it’s often pretty superficial. That’s why using money as a measure of success if BS imho. Others who seem to achieve less actually have much more impact in the long-term because of their more analytical mind. It took Einstein many years to come up and publish his theory of relativity for instance. There are different kinds of smart. There are different ways of doing things. People have different personalities, speeds, and temperaments. This is just how she is and how you are. Could be a little bit of that for sure. I was IQ tested in elementary school and borderline, so within 1 or 2 points of the cut off. They said at any other school, I would’ve just been lumped into the “gifted” program anyway. But since there were so many kids in our school already in the program, they didn’t bother with me lol. I’m guessing that’s why they had such a cutoff to begin with. OP, what treatment were you referring to when you said you “received treatment as a kid that made you more competitive”?
I consider myself academically smart because I have had a successful academic journey and now doing PhD from a top school. And my Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this fiancee considers me ‘as slow and rigid as a stone’. And I completely agree. I have so many thoughts in my mind that I try to reduce my cognitive load with all other daily stuff. Compensatory adaption. This isn’t a formal syndrome in medical or psychological terms, but more of a concept. It suggests that when someone excels in one area, often due to their upbringing or environment, they might lack skills or abilities in another area as a form of balance. For example: I have a friend who is an athlete, but she has no innates when it comes to fashion; a friend who is exceptionally good at math, but bad at withholding a conversation; a exceptionally social friend who has poor sense of balance. I’m familiar with upstate. How rural do you mean? I was in honors classes as well and I didn’t find them very difficult. They tried to put me in regents classes and it was profoundly boring.
My wife as well. She triple (triple) majored in college in Malaysia. Multimedia, electrical and computer engineering. She has her MBA and just finished her PhD. Yet she still gets lost in our neighborhood when going for a walk. There has always been the Angelique Cyr Arizona State Sun Devils Signature 90s Vintage Players Graphic Shirt But I will love this saying “book smart vs. street smart” and I think that’s very true. I did horrible in school but I have a strong career and I’m making 6 figures before 30. I mean I basically flunked out of HS my freshman year and the only reason I gave a shit about it Sophomore through Senior year is because my parents took away my freedom cause of my grades and I wasn’t bold enough to disobey them. Also my gf at the time was good at school so she motivated me to stay on top of it. In college I basically did flunk out my first year and was on academic probation before switching to tech school. With no parents to threaten my freedom, I really didn’t care. Even at tech school, which I loved, I didn’t finish my degree because I didn’t want to live in my college town for one extra semester just to take 2 final credits in my degree (I regret that decision today).
