Oh. My. God. My mind is blown. As an English kid, having never heard it said aloud, I tried to start a conversation about the band “Zed Zed Top”. While we are on the topic of pronouncing letter names, let’s fuck the whole “double-U” thing off and name it something like “wu”. Mexican-Spanish says “double U” as well where as Spain-Spanish I’ve heard “double V”, which actually makes most sense lol Is that right? Interesting, when I took Spanish in school, I was taught Mexican Spanish, and was told that W was “double V.” Then again, I live in the US, so I know to take whatever foreign language education I’ve received with a grain of salt… W isn’t “native” to Spanish. It’s only found in loan words from other languages. That’s probably why it’s pronounced like that. When I was younger than ten, I listened to a Canadian band. They had a kids album that my uncle got for me, and in one of their songs, they mention ZZ Top. They pronounced it “zed” and I thought that was just the name of the band.

When I asked my dad about ZZ Top, I pronounced it the Always Hot in the Valley Phoenix Suns NBA Suns Basketball Shirt Apart from…,I will love this way they did in the song. My dad tried to correct me, saying it was pronounced “zee” in the US. I didn’t realize it was the letter, and got into an argument with him about how to say the band’s name. I failed to understand why the heck my dad wanted to say the band’s name wrong until he finally explained it to me. I’m Canadian and the first I heard of ZZ Top was a reference in a Calvin & Hobbes strip. I heard it in my head as “zee zee” but maybe Sesame Street primed me for that. I later heard another kid talking about the same strip (the books were in our library and everyone read them) and he said “zed zed” and I thought “that seems wrong”. Oh that’s Barenaked Ladies! They’re my favourite band of all time but I was too old for that album when it came out so I never listened to it all the way through.
