I put trust, and I didn’t realize that meant they could fire me at any will.OP, if it’s any consolation, this place taught you something. It taught what red flags look like from a company. Think about all the things you saw before accepting the internship, and during the job, be wary of companies like this moving forward. small companies like this dont hire interns. they want cheap developers. they are not interested in teaching. they just want work done on the cheap.

Just budding in to say my first internship was at a small company and it was fucking amazing. It’s more about learning to discern which are worth your time. They were banking on ‘smart college student thirsty for experience. Pulling all nighter. I’ve given them the IRS link regarding this and advised them to follow the links therein to dispute this, as they are clearly and purposefully misclassified and experiencing wage theft. It sounds like that place sucks and doesn’t know what the hell an internship is supposed to be. They should not expect you to pick up a language quickly and they should be supportive of your learning. Interns are supposed to be slow! If they don’t have the capacity to train you, they should not have hired you. They were probably looking for cheap labor that doesn’t have to give benefits, so they listed a regular-ish job as an ‘internship’. I’ve seen that at a few places, even Mayo Clinic. Don’t be hard on yourself – you did everything right (well, from what we can tell) – and try to find something worthwhile to work on during the summer. I’ll go even further and say, at a normal, stable company, it’s pretty much expected that there’s a good chance whatever an intern works on might not get into the actual product, or will still require a lot of work even after the intern leaves. Yea they’re clearly trying to exploit interns as cheap labour. People have been debating whitespace for as long as languages have existed that include it.
