Americans have a bit different evaluation of human life. For example, shootings and murder, or no-go zones in population centers are normalized, while in random EU country, a murder, lost person or whatever is taken very seriously and there’s no general apathy towards human life like you’d have in US. With this, “everybody helping everybody” mentality is weaker as well – as people class themselves more as “have’s” and “have-nots”, and wouldn’t want to pay their taxes to support everyone. Add a lot of propaganda and lobbying from insurance companies (and medical system itself) and education system that’s been broken for nearly all of 300 years of US history and it’d be quite hard to sell universal healthcare. People can’t want a thing they don’t understand, and health is pretty precious thing, so they’d be quite unwilling to risk/experiment with it.

Also, taxes in US are generally quite low. Socialized healthcare would add a lot to it, and even though people pay same (or even more money) for current system, all they’d see is a bigger tax, which would be unpopular. US will have universal healthcare down the Alex Karaban Uconn Huskies Men’s basketball shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this road. And metric system and every other globally accepted, proven-to-be-sane-and-superior standard. It’ll just take a lot of time and probably rapidly worsened quality of life to push people to improve anything. If all’s fine, nobody cares to move their ass or brain cells. It’s the hardship and challenges that lead to progress and improvement. That’s universal law of the nature; trees only grow taller if there’s not enough sunlight under forest canopy. And US is doing fine enough right now, so change isn’t on the horizon anytime soon. The question to ask is why they have been conditioned to hate and fear it, and why no one is trying to change it. For such a free enterprise society, the idea of burdening corporations with the health care costs of their workers is bizarre and incredibly inefficient.
