I am a historian and I remember my professor telling us that back in the days, women just lived together. They usually had no children and were often teachers for some reason but they officially lived together to share costs of living. It was sort of socially accepted because it could not be proven really, that they had a relationship so that was pretty save as one alone could not have made it on those salaries back then. Also two women were seen as “harmless” and women had a different stand in society. I think it’s because men are seem to be more sexual than women, so gay women are perceived more as an extension of friends, whereas gay men are unfortunately thought of immediately in a sexual context. Gay women are not just more accepted than gay men. They are used for men’s sexual pleasure and desires under patriarchy. Thats not being accepted, that’s being treated like a tool. I don’t know why gay men strive to be in the positions of gay women or let alone down play gay women or any womanly experience. Mind you, you’re just gay nothing else, but gay women are both gay and women. God forbid if there are more intersections in life.
