People think that corporations are these infallible beasts consistently finding the 91st Birthday Awesome Since 1931 91 Years Old Baseball T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this most efficient ways of solving tasks and carrying out processes but the reality is that they get it wrong more often than not. Corporations are large groups of individual people acting in their own self interest and trying to be controlled by a management structure to turn a profit and work towards the company’s best interests as efficiently as possible, this is a monumentally difficult task on the best of days. Luck is completely discounted from any discussions in corporate America in my experience too, something worked before and it will work again if we try it again but harder this time and then it might even work better and bigger. People rarely stop to ask if the process is even why they got to where they are, and if the same process will generate results on the next task or the next iteration of whatever they are doing. I was in a scenario where this process had been done a single way for a long time and it was crazy inefficient but it worked. Until it didn’t, then the whole process relied on one person to just get shit done for maybe 4 hours instead of several people taking several days for the task. The person finished the task in about 4 hours by themselves and then everyone sighed a big sigh of relief and went back to what they were doing before…. The process had worked because the task got completed on-time and status reports were marked green and boxes were checked. Nobody gave a shit that the process was hopelessly broken and took way longer than necessary because if you eliminate too many of these things then the whole system breaks down as we realize we are spending twice as long as needed on most things, but then encounter the terrifying reality that there isn’t something more pressing that needs to be done instead of the immediate inefficient process. So getting rid of it will save $X but only if you think the people involved will produce that amount of extra labour in other tasks now that they are free from the original bloated task. This is rarely the case, but then the alternative is laying off a percentage of the work force and so you get people protecting their domain within a corporation because they want to be managing X people even if they should only have X-5 people to complete the necessary work in their domain.

Anyways this rant is getting away from me big time, but the 91st Birthday Awesome Since 1931 91 Years Old Baseball T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this main point is that corporations are not the infallible efficient machines that marketing and cultivated public images would like you to believe. There is lots of waste and bloat and terrible decisions made to try to capture “value” that may not even exist, but people are too scared or disincentivized to even try to examine whether it exists and so they sprint towards it anyways. This is my most cynical take on it but likely shaped partially because I’m in a bad mood right now and feeling bitter. Some things, like clothing, are better to choose in person. Photos don’t give an accurate description of the details and sizes are inconsistent. Other things, like books, are great online if all you want is to get a particular book you already know about. Physical bookstores are good for browsing, socializing and in the case of better ones, getting recommendations We should start some kind of physical book store with an Amazon prime-like membership but instead of buying the books you just rent them, but at no extra cost. Just give them back when you’re done. I guess like Netflix, but for books? Idk I’ll have to figure out the kinks but that would really revolutionize the book business.
