Yes, the creation of echo chambers has exacerbated it to some extent, but there’s another cause people miss. Social media has given the spotlight and voices to people you probably would have never heard from otherwise. By way of example, I think it was easier for many people in the 60s to “agree to disagree” about issues like civil rights since most people were white and didn’t personally know any black people. Many white people were sympathetic to the civil rights movement, but it was easier to let an argumentative relative go off unchallenged or to treat it like an academic discussion since, whatever happened, it wouldn’t really affect you.
