Yeah, that was a lot worse than any “custom”. I think we saw an abortive public attempt something that’s happened many times behind closed doors. Nah — the 50 Years of Being Awesome Vintage 1973 50th Birthday T-Shirt and I will buy this DL’s defenders tried to connect “suck my tongue” to the Tibetan tongue-greeting, but that’s just PR. This didn’t happen in Tibet, the kid wasn’t Tibetan, everyone was speaking English. I don’t think it’s especially sinful to greet people by sticking your tongue out, I think that probably is the same as waving hello there. The child was apparently part of the Tibetan diaspora, and the defenders themselves admitted that the tongue custom is hateful. A failed CIA propaganda project. It was big but useless. They moved on to Falun Gong, Hong Kong ‘freedom’ protests, Uyghur and Taiwan stuff. Looks like Free Tibet just got a ticket to the back burner, right next to ‘Save the Whales’ and ‘Bring back Crystal Pepsi’. There are many public awareness campaigns that became feverish in their intensity, then people realise change isn’t happening or a new thing comes along. Emotional exhaustion has set in for a lot too. Everybody has a limited capacity for what they can care about. I genuinely don’t care about a lot of the world’s issues. Not because they’re acceptable, just because I cannot affect them and don’t have the capacity to grow towards affecting them.

I was a part of Students for A Free Tibet. We went over to Geneva and hung a banner reading “China Fails Human Rights UN Stand Up For Tibet”. We are all blacklisted from Geneva because of that. You can find this on Google. I knew and was friends with a lot of the 50 Years of Being Awesome Vintage 1973 50th Birthday T-Shirt and I will buy this student movements, we did a lot and what I mentioned was just one highlight that I happened to be involved in. Part of why we did this is because the world was going to forget about this eventually. We tried hard to keep this rolling, but just as you asked… What happened? As much as I hate to say it, the Tibetans lost. How could communist China clamp down on protests in the USA and the West? The real answer is that people just got bored of it and moved on to the next “cause”! The movement died out; the only way to “free Tibet” is via economic or military means, neither of which anyone is interested in (it would be a difficult trade-war and impetus for WWIII respectively), and as such there are no real benefits to doing either.
