I’m good at math and have a PhD in stats. I’ve always done extremely well in academics. Do not ask me to read a map, navigate anywhere, or visualize something in my head because we will get lost and I’ve tried learning but it just isn’t happening. I’m also slower than average at most daily tasks but I don’t care as long as they get done. Yeah I love economics, accounting and other applied mathematics but I am completely useless at IT or even programming the clock on the range. It’s been 2.3 hours ahead for months now Book smarts and being able to study and retain knowledge can be very different to ability to learn and do things hands on. I’ve known quite a few very intelligent people who amaze me that they could make it through the day without help. On the flip side I’ve also known many people who were not great students but they excelled at other areas such as construction/craft/trade work, music, art, etc.

On school standards though that’s another story. School districts vary drastically. I’ve seen it with my kids school district versus my step kids. My step kids have hardly any homework and when they do it’s very simple. My kids have homework everyday and it looks almost a year ahead of what my step kids bring home. As a former “Gifted KidTM”, many folks with neurodivergent traits (like ADHD in my case) meant we could excel at academics, but struggle with executive function or other things.
