I was also really intimidated by the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this terminal etc once upon a time. Everyone is at the beginning. Imposter syndrome is extremely common in this industry. Don’t let it deter you. Do they know how to use the Microsoft Office suite?! I took a class in high school called “business computing information systems.” It was basically just learning Office. We covered Word, Excel, PowerPoint, even Access. And it was very detailed. How to format graphs in Excel. How to specify number of points of spacing after a paragraph in Word or create your own tabs. It was one of the most useful classes I ever took. I always served as a sort of editor and proof reader in college for group projects because I had the best formatting skills.
101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt: Perfect for Fans
My kids are handed laptops in kindergarten in their district. The assumption is there are no computers at home, so they’re taught how to use them at school. My kid doesn’t know how to use a web browser yet, but knows what to do when you take him to an age-appropriate educational page. He’s doing multiplication, reading and writing, and having a generally good educational time in 1st grade. I don’t know what the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this rest of the country is doing, but I think we are quickly going to have a huge educational divide in the country between districts that educated their students and districts that didn’t. And since most people don’t move far from home, this is going to be a local problem to those districts.
there’s a huge divide between gen z born pre 2004 and after imo. i was also born in 02 and have been deep in the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this PC sauce for the better part of 12 years now, building my first computer when i was 9 with my dad. i don’t meet many people who have the level of computer illiteracy described in this thread, that seems to be more a gen alpha thing. 2000. A lot of my internet usage was on the computer, especially at school. I think maybe 1 of my teachers had a tablet and we had to share that. Most of my internet usage at school was either on desktop computers or the school laptops that we had to return to the cart and plug in by the end of the period. I took typing classes in middle school. Still comes in handy. I also had to use flash drives back in my school days. We learned what a floppy disk was, but we didn’t use them. Our tech guy has said the same thing about the teachers at the school…there’s no icon so they don’t know how to get to things. Its not just kids.

Or follow directions. Teachers can be the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this worst. In spite of being one of those artsy-fartsy English types, I also spent some years as the staff tech trainer in the early aughts. Oh sweet baby cheezits. Remember, though (I tried to), that you’re dealing with the most stressed-out profession out there. Those affective defenses go up FAST. But wow, was I glad to not do that anymore. My job is tough, but I would never want to be the tech person at a school (k8 school approx 200 teachers and staff + 1700 students with 1:1 devices). He’s only on campus twice a week, which is ridiculous for any tech person, but especially one for this sized school. Why did they let honors get so watered down? In my high school, only the like top 10 students out of my class of over 900 took 5 AP classes. Now, I talk to very mediocre students who say they are in all AP classes. ??? I took calculus BC and when I went to college I was able to immediately start multi variable calculus. That was the only AP class I ever took.
I’ve been asked, repeatedly, what ‘right clicking’ means. They can’t search for something on their phone, they’ll just google it and re-download it. The only kids that have some experience on PCs rather than phones are gamers, the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this average kid has no idea what a computer can do and how to use it. Lol, I feel we’ve come full circle from the time when my computer class teacher removed the icons for the preinstalled games and assumed it was gone. Not knowing that they still existed and that their students could still find them in the windows folder. Smart phones have done an insane amount of damage to students. It’s crazy how many college students I meet who don’t know how to operate a computer at even a basic level, but spend all their free time on ipads or their phones. It used to be if you liked tech, you were computer literate, but the presence of smart phones and tablets has ruined that.
This is a thing often misunderstood by older generations. They call the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this 2000s+ generations “digital natives”, expecting them to be good at IT-related things due to growing up with it. I’ll say that was accurate for a part of the 90s-kids, where you grew up with constantly misbehaving operating systems like Windows 98 and needed to get technical more often than not. But it was a transitory phenomenon. With the rise of smartphones and tablets (and generally more reliable OS like later windows, macOS) with their various app stores, people just don’t have to engage with the technicalities anymore. Instead, they receive pre-made apps and content. In my experience, the 2000+ generation tends to be massively less tech-savvy than even people born in the 50s, who might only have started using computers well into their adulthood, but still at a more basic and technical level when they did. Tech in the social media era devoured the digital world of the 90s and early 2000s. Websites and devices now exist not to give access to a wider world, but to capture and constrain. These kids are not digital natives, they’re digital zoo animals.
On the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this other hand, if you ever wished the job market wasn’t so competitive, you’re in luck! Just wait 5 years or so Also, let’s cut the iPads out of school. I’m not even that old, I’m 30. Born in 93, but WHY do kids need iPads all day at school? Just utilize a computer room. We did stuff on paper and used pens/pencils. Do kids even write in school anymore? OMG I feel like I just wrote this! There are no hobbies! No interests at all! I wish the computers were back on racks to be checked out from the library like they were a few years ago. The kids should not be taking these home because they don’t respect them and they are never charged!!!! I do think it’s the phones and constant reliance on tech! What did we think was going to happen? They don’t read and they don’t write. Writing has a direct correlation to learning!
Right!! Growing up if I had appointments or whatever I read magazines. Maybe looked around or worse…just sat there!!!! Look I will even admit I have a phone addiction. But I’m 30. I made my dumb choices and I have to suffer because of it. I’ve seen a mom mention she’s sad her 8 year old doesn’t play with toys anymore…. WHAT?!!!!! Why aren’t 8 year olds playing?!!!! The most upsetting aspect to me is how the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this students will feel when they are adults. Of course they don’t (or refuse) to see it now. Their brains are incapable of seeing the “big picture” consequences of not having these basic skills. I’m from New Orleans, which is pretty much “ahead of the curve” in a bad way on this issue. We’ve got a lot, lot, lot of very poorly educated people. Once adulthood sets in for most of these folks, they won’t feel stupid or angry at school/parents. They will in large part eventually be unaware of the idea that they SHOULD know some of these things and simply accept ignorance as normalcy. When they make poor decisions because they lacked the thinking skills to make a better choice, it will not be cause for anger at themselves or school. It will be cause for anger at some third party who has screwed them over. I feel like the only way I can describe these people is “peasants” tbh. Not even in a derogatory way, that’s the most apt description: these people have the same mindset as medieval peasants, which is that as long as nothing interrupts the labor they do which allows them to eat and sleep under a roof in a bed while occasionally getting to have sex with someone, they will seek no knowledge or self improvement because why would they when they already possess the extent of human joy? Frankly, this is something that my teachers never told us, and I fault them for it. I went through two decades of educations, and no one could tell me why any of it mattered. A lot of stuff turned out to be really useful, but I only learned why much later.
Both options require a level of awareness and reflection. I’m afraid the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this majority will be unaffected because they won’t know what they cannot think to know. I graduated in 2009 from a not great high school. I was a c&d math student all the way through but they graduated me anyways. The only job I could get was fast food, $8.50/hr. I didn’t get full time hours and I lived right at the federal poverty line in terms of income. I did not LIKE living in poverty at age 18 and resolved I would not do it forever. I went to community college where they had me do remedial math testing. I could do math at a fifth grade level. Not quite as far behind as some of the teachers here mention kids being, but I was 19 years old and I “wasn’t smarter than a fifth grader”. I spent a summer on Kahn academy teaching myself math. Starting at fifth grade level multiplying with decimals, long division, fractions. Worked my way up to algebra in a summer. Passed college algebra with a B and I am DAMN proud of that B on my transcript.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Management & have managed multiple successful businesses. We live.. well above the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this poverty line. When you’re the one that has to scrub vomit out of a fast food playscape, don’t get mad at school, at society, at yourself. Go home and wash the vomit off and stick your head in a damn math textbook until you FIX IT. I’m going to be an old grump because I am. No one cares. We almost ALL have to deal with this. My 10th grade class has a reading average of 2nd grade. No one cares. They don’t know what noun is. No one cares. Because if they did, something would have been done already. Previous generations all worried the kids were going to come in and take up their jobs; about 2 months into lock downs this entire idea left my mind completely.
If anything, I worry that the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this shortage is going to be so severe once I’m able to no one will be around for me to actually spend all the money I’ve made on their services. Good luck getting a deck built for your home; or need any major work done because there is already no one to do it. They will pass some law that forces all of us to come back and work. Because the upcoming generation can’t deal with it. Heh”We’ve arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.” It took a few more decades than he probably expected, but we’ve reached that point. Education isn’t seen as a paramount obligation, not only to up and coming generations, but even to ourselves. No, it’s content. It’s a for profit endeavor. It’s nothing more than a frivolous period of time treated with the same amount of gravity one might give to the intermission between a double header. The worst part is that it’s seemingly universal. Part of me wants to think, when I hear these stories, that it’s poor and underrepresented communities once again being hit hard, but no. Rich neighborhoods with traditionally good school districts have the same deficits.
You’d think that at least the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this wealthy elites would be investing in making sure their kids are educated correctly, but are they? Have you ever interacted with some upper crust fucker? They’re even dumber because they expect the money to never run out and there to always be someone there to take care of them and their money. No one is at the helm. well, when that trend started, there was a genuine lack of tradespeople. Not sure if there still are, but it didn’t come from nowhere. Post great recession there was a huge lack of skilled electricians, welders, plumbers, etc. In the past year I started self educating (in my 30s) full stack web development from nearly zero prior knowledge, loving The Odin Project, and til this thread I always had a slight worry about how much competition of younger generations coming behind me. Ya I am not quite as worried about that now, if anything my value might increase by time feel like ready to start applying in another year or two. Sounds like more will age out of technical careers than enter it even if demand stays same or higher. Even with AI tools improving still going to need the skill to use them, applying finishing touches, and correct when they get something wrong.
Wrong….their will always be grunts who can hammer nails and work with their hands. Your issues will be finding engineers to work up architectural drawings for things. They’ll probably just due away with code ordinances at that point. My thinking has gone from “how can I compete in this vast, diverse workforce?” to “maybe if I tough it out another 5 years I’ll actually be incredibly valuable because I have basic skills and knowledge.” No one will try to address a bottom up approach to this issue, just keep pushing down from Superintendent to Admin to Teachers who just want to freaking teach. Well it’s not a bug, it’s a feature. 1/2 of the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this political power in this country wants to destroy Public Education because of what it stands for. They also directly benefit from an uneducated voter-base. Hence, they have a deliberate reason to not give a shit. In fact, they are directly invested in it’s failure.
100% agree. 32 years, and I am so over this. It breaks my heart to see these posts from well-meaning teachers, no hate, who still have those rose colored glasses on. This sub is a tiny echo chamber. We all know it’s over. The general public just doesn’t care. Those who do get their kids into good, functioning schools. The rest suffer. Hmmm…when 50% of the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this intelligent people who have invested many many thousands of dolalrs and years of time to become teachers, run, screaming, out of the profession within five years, right there is hard evidence that this sub is NOT an echo chamber of disgruntled folks getting their grunts, but rather a very realistic shot of the state of things. And while I am not wearing rose-colored glasses, I will go down fighting and I will go down with the ship. Why? Because somebody has gEh. Parents don’t give a shit. Those in power are simply benefitting from it. It’s more than just that. We have several evil actors trying to destroy our education system. I’m speaking as someone that works in rural Texas on an unincorporated piece of land. In Texas, our governor is holding school funds hostage because he wants to force his stupid voucher program to pass, which will devastate public school funding and hurt poor kids the most. Because of Greg Abbott, a Hitler on wheels, we now have several districts in my area firing their librarians, getting rid of their sports programs, it’s horrible and we can’t act like it’s just happening passively. There are many people actively seeking to destroy our education and keep the public dumb.
I’m in Harris County and every district is short of funding and multiple charters are opening every where. One district just announced it is not going to have librarians. HISD was taken over. I mean that’s not true as stated. Because this could lead one to believe schools are overfunded and that all you need to do is cut funding and force some BS austerity measures on teachers to force the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this system into success. What that stat actually is, is a reflection that Wealthy districts outperform poor ones because of things in the overall society around them. The wealthiest districts always outperform the poorest ones, regardless of their per-pupil expenditures. Because (duh) the wealthy district doesn’t have to spend as much resources on students below grade-level, and supplement social resources that are generally given/supplemented via parents in the wealthy districts. For Instance: You could easily cherry-pick the same state to say schools that spend less per-player on football do better than schools that spend more per-player. Because schools serving a poor area are likely going to fully subsidize the pay-to-play expense of the kids, whereas the wealthy district is not. The wealthy district will have the parents pay-to-play and thus not be a district expenditure. Those same parents will then have private training, lessons etc…for their kids as well.
So that stat, doesn’t mean what you think it does…and it’s grossly out of context (and deliberately so for political reasons). Glad to see someone see it for what it is. The wave of demonizing public education comments aren’t what they appear to be. Hopefully, people realize that before they win public support. Yes! Thank you. There have been an awful lost of suspiciously anti public education comments and replies recently. Like someone out there is intentionally trying to gaslight the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this public into thinking public k-12 is an abomination. Once they get popular support, then they make their move to gut or completely end public schools in the US. Don’t believe every comment about “failing schools” is coming from an honest actor. Some of these comments are manipulative in nature.
The most imporant question to ask about “failing schools” is “failing compared TO WHAT?” they never define that. They just assert it as fact. The nice thing is you can flip their own rhetoric against them. Because they are generally the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this same people to put forth the meritocracy and personal-responsibility arguments, and you can push those right back at them. What makes you say that? Like is this problem happening worse in red states? In districts whose funding has decreased? If this issue is a “feature” why this not happening in states like Texas for decades that have been paying teachers poorly for a long time? It’s adorable you think anyone within arm’s reach of the levers of power in this country wants a populace that’s capable of critical thinking. Half of the political class wants to destroy education, whereas the other half only sees value in it if it funnels people into voting for them.
The half you’re talking about are not the 101 Dalmatians Watching TV Ugly Christmas Shirt moreover I love this ones that enacted policies to advance students who didn’t meet the qualifications so they could pretend to be doing something about the lack of education in black communities by pointing at graduation rates. That their little bout of white supremacy backfired is only a surprise for the ignorant who couldn’t figure out what removing any standards for graduation meant. It’s insane that you try to blame this on republicans. In my state the city districts are spending 30 THOUSAND DOLLARS PER PUPIL PER YEAR, and still more than half the kids can’t do math or read at grade level. How much are we supposed to throw into this bottomless pit before we admit that something besides funding is problem?
